This scene definitely gave me a shock...

When all my feelings lived throughout the movie had settled, I understood the mixed reactions I had read before watching Dunki myself...it is a bold movie which indeed can give a rollercoaster ride of feelings...and - imo - also incites discussion.

Ok finally got to watch the movie had really high hopes from this collaboration and they delivered till a certain extent.

TBH I have never been a Hirani fan, barring Lage Raho Munna Bhai didn't like his brand of cinema, have always found it too preachy. This one lacked that preachiness which I personally liked but in the process the film ended up looking like it lacked a solid stance. The characters Hirani created were too quixotic for the plot. The rehashing Ali Fazal's 3 idiots' arc for Vicky Kaushal was a turn off and kinda hampered the ongoing momentum of the 1st half.

The screenplay could have been & should have been more seamless, there should have been a bit more humour in the 2nd half. The supporting cast was fab, Vicky & Boman Irani were underutilised. Minus 1 emotional scene SRK's performance was great, he did really really well but it's high time he lets go off this de-aged clean shave look obsession, it's too darn distracting.

Apart from the not so seamless screenplay and SRK's VFX look the 3rd biggest problem with the film is Taapsee Pannu, that's not to do anything with her performance she does a fine job, but it just ain't enough. When a large part of your film is a Veer-Zaara esque storyline, you do not take a random chic half your age and expect magic to happen in terms of chemistry. Hers was hands down the most demanding role and it needed someone of Priyanka Chopra or Kareena Kapoor's calibre n aura to help execute this camp idea.

Pritam's music was on point and helped the movie in a big way. Most of the jokes landed imo, both the SRK-Vicky scenes were brilliantly acted, the penultimate act of the film was the highlight point for me. The climax was not upto the mark, Manu's death didn't create the desired impact.

All in all I'd still say a must watch coz if the biggest star & director of the industry were not able to make or break records in drama genre then rest assured ab sirf action flicks & sequels ka barrage aane wala hai, this might just be the last one of this genre mounted on this kinda scale.

But seriously do watch, 3.5 stars.

Yes, that was very weird. She dies and then they give us facts and stats showing tragic images of real life people on dunkis. It's like the film realized it was getting too emotional and downbeat and wanted to end on a happier note (perhaps because audiences have a tendency to rate films based on how the last scene made them feel) so they switch to a happier, comedic scene so people leave the theater with a smile on their face never mind Taapsee's death or the tragic real life incidents.

They didn't even give us a minute to mourn her death. She just died and BAM! They moved on with their life like nothing ever happened.

I dont know that i was expecting bit more but i was okay with taapsee killing if they showed her dead on one of border crossing. I would love it if movie had two parts one to london in dunki and other to india via dunki only . Then if they would have showed taapsee dieing on one of border rather than tumor track, it would have been much much more impactful

I agree, it would have been more impactful if she died that way rather than being ill. But I guess that wouldn't work because she needed a reason to go back to India asap

I'm glad they didn't take the dunki route on the way back though, it would have gotten too repetitive and boring then

He got a lot of backlash on Twitter when he said that Anushka had to die for not loving Ranbir back.

In an interview with an online portal, Karan said that Anushka's character was punished with death as she did not love Ranbir's character. "Yes, the last track met with many polarised responses and rightfully so, but I was like she didn't love him, she has to die. I wrote this character. He loved her so crazily. She could've loved him back, why couldn't she? So she got cancer and she died," he said. "

Well, she got punished, I wrote it. See, a filmmaker is a God, you write, you create and you destroy," the filmmaker added. Incidentally, he drew from his own unreciprocated love stories while writing Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

According to Karan, there was nothing problematic, as "he was not inappropriate with her". When it was pointed out to him that Ranbir's character not only gets physically aggressive with Anushka's character but also guilt-trips her into returning his feelings, he continued to defend his film.

"I didn't look at it like that, to me he was just a puppy who was just in love and it's not like she didn't love him. She just didn't love him in the way that he wanted her to love him. About the physical aggression, I apologise. That is not something I had thought of earlier and I should have," the filmmaker said.

"But I am not going to be apologetic about his relentlessness and his love, because he loved her even after she was gone. He never stopped loving her... I believe Ayan was a lover," he added.

Well, actually, we got prepared to an early death...we got informed the same time Hardy got informed...and (again) contrary to another movie SRK did, Hardy was ready to marry Manu even knowing she could die every minute. His expression at the end shows that he was also mourning an opportunity in this life they didn't get.

But - if one believes in it - they will get together in a certain way in the next life to - maybe - fulfill their karma. So, the present life did now focus on other things as Manu would continue to live - in Hardy's heart and mind...with her determination and energy.

There exist a thinking that the body creates a tumour because of something that constantly bothers your psyche but doesn't get resolved/faced openly...a tumour hasn't to be maligne when getting build...it still depends on the nature of what made it...

Manu had been "ill" for 25 years...from the moment she decided to bash her homeland although knowing that she had said a lie...that never left her feeling and thinking, she just suppressed it...but the soul would react...it always react...it's the human core.

So, the border wasn't the 'real' issue...that's why the movie is far deeper than it seems...

I think that none of SRK's movies from PBDHH on has only one layer... Zero has five I noticed...

ADHM was a v e r y self-centered, selfish and utterly wrong movie...even the content of SRK's cameo was wrong, imo. I know, SRK did the cameo just for his affection for Karan...unrequited love isn't his 'thing'...unconditional is. (it's quite different).
