Smita Patil! Amazing actress and I have loved so many of her movies but I feel she's kind of overlooked in Arth since it's supposed to be Shabana Azmi's story. The way she portrays the other woman - in a layered, nuanced way, her jealousy, her insecurity and that slow, downward spiral? It made me hate Inder so much for doing that to two women - Pooja and Kavita. She was spellbinding in that role. There was always a quiet intensity about her - even when she was doing dramatic scenes. Her eyes - they conveyed everything. In that respect, I find her akin to Dilip Kumar. They didn't need over the top gestures or body movements to convey their feelings, they did it with subtle shifts and just their eyes. Such expressive eyes she had! Though Shakti was touted as a face-off between Amitabh and DK, it's Smita's scenes with DK that stand out for me!

Even in a totally commercial outing like Namak Halaal, she managed to downplay her mannerisms and gave Poonam a quiet dignity that balanced out Arjun Singh (Amitabh's) OTT-ness. I miss her and yes, if she were around we'd have been blessed with so much more from her!

Mujhe pata nahi tha ki Smita was an admirer of Nutan - but it doesn't surprise me. Their brand of acting is very similar. Nutan also conveyed emotions very subtly.

I don't have many favorite Smita Patil songs: she wasn't known for songs, more for acting but here are a couple:
