I don't care about the "gender politics" bullshit. Not everyfilm has to be watched from that angle.

There are far worse film in the 90s to be offended about. smiley26

K3G was grand, superficial, OTT and I loved it.smiley32smiley36 BW will never be able pull off something that big ever again.

Kal Ho Na Ho is the most emotional one. Only KJo film that made me cry.smiley19

KANK was closer to reality than any of his films has ever been. It just didn't release at the right time. Great performances, although there were some cringe moments in the film that should've been chopped-off.

My Name is Khan doesn't even look like a KJo film when you group it with his other films. It was such a well-made film. It is very underrated work of KJo IMHO.

SOTY is KJo's worst work.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Aishwarya and the music are the only two good things about this film.

Rocky Rani is a GenZ film done right, that keeps the emotions and story together, without going overboard with "wokeness".

As usual, everything you say is basically exactly what I'm thinking and feeling as well.

KKHH is a classic beloved to this day. Not every film has to age well and as you said, there are far worse films with more terrible messages than this one. It's really quite tame in comparison and the chemistry and performances make this film along with the music.

K3G is a guilty pleasure and I think Karan's longest film at basically 3 hours 30 minutes, but I never felt it was a long film at all when I would rewatch it. It's just that gripping and truly such a superb cast with everyone perfectly cast. It felt like the 90s family dramas but elevated and we really haven't seen a film like this ever again.

Kal Ho Naa Ho is one of the first movies that ever made me cry. In fact, when I rewatch it I often still cry because it's so tragic. I think Preity said this was her saddest happy film.

KANK suffered the same way Silsila did. A movie with a high-profile cast about adultery that Indian audiences could not accept. It was ahead of its time, everyone agrees with that. Even so, unlike Silsila which flopped in India, KANK still did well even if it was not a blockbuster in India. And abroad, it was the highest grossing film so definitely one that resonated with NRIs and western audiences. Another film like K3G with a high-profile cast that has not been repeated since.

My Name is Khan is wonderful and I agree a film that does not seem like a Kjo film at all. So different from the rest of his films. I like this one a lot even if I admit it's not one I rewatch a lot. Part of that is because i also find this one very sad since it's rare to see children die onscreen and it shocked me first that Kajol's son is killed off halfway through. There were early rumors that Kjo would include his usual cameos in this movie with special appearances with Rani and Preity, so I'm not sure if that was just audience expectations because that was the pattern with his previous films or if KJo himself realized this was not the type of movie that worked with cameos.

I've only seen SOTY once and haven't felt a need to revisit it again. Sid and Varun help make this film though and I can see why an entire generation of girls fell in love with them.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil I've only seen once as well and never wanted to revisit. Anushka was good even if I didn't care much for her character but I could not stand Ranbir and the love story did not work for me at all. As you said, the only good part of this film is Aishwarya. It's such a shame that after years of Karan wanting to cast her, this is the only movie he could come up with to cast her in. The only good scene is the Aish/SRK cameo. At that moment, all you want to do is throw Ranbir off the screen because the two real actors/legends are together and no one else matters. The entire film should have been about them. I'll thank Karan for giving us one last look at this formidable jodi. I remember after this movie, there was a lot of hype about reuniting SRK/Aish and there were rumors that Bhansali wanted to make a film to reunite them.

Rocky aur Rani isn't as good as his first few films but it's certainly better than SOTY and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. It felt like a throwback to his KKHH years and gives me hope that his next movies will also improve.

I love all but if you were to ask me which films have repeat value it’s K3G and KKHH regardless of how much we troll these movies I can watch them anytime anywhere. SRKajol’s magic is something I could never get tired of.

MNIK doesn’t count as Karan movie honestly cause it doesn’t feel like one and even though I LOVEEE the movie it’s too heavy to rewatch it again and again.

This is how I feel. I haven't rewatched it in years even though I enjoyed and admired it very much. It doesn't have the rewatch value because it's so emotionally heavy.

My Name is Khan?

Most certainly. This was SRK's last Filmfare win. Same with Kajol but his was even more deserving since he's playing an autistic character. It felt very real and not at all like he was acting. I think NRIs could relate more because it's about terrorism and the perception of Muslims in America and western countries especially in a post 9/11 world. Very different from Kjo's usual films as it's not glossy or superficial at all (not that those are bad traits exactly but they don't work in this type of film).

You can see from other posts on here that people who love Kjo's usual types of films may admire this film but are not as warm to it. Similarly, people who would not like Kjo's usual tend to enjoy this because it's so different.

smiley31smiley31Absolutely agreed.

Regarding Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I really don't understand the who fiasco about its gender politics, that people keep going on and on about. I think Rani and Kajol correctly reprimanded KJo recently on KWK, and told him to stop being so apologetic about something that they did 25 years ago.

I mean can list at least 20 "successful" Bollywood films from the 90s that were problematic, yet no one calls them about or writes essays on them. I am in full support of modern day ideas of feminism and equality, but targeting films KKHH that were made with good intentions and were not even that problem....is not going to result in anything.

I can understand people calling out Kal Ho Na Ho for its homophobic Kanta Bai jokes. Although it is not a KJo directorial venture.... I think I read it somewhere that it was ghost directed or almost co-directed by him because the story was written by him. I mean I vaguely remember that the film was promoted as a KJo film, back in early 2000s unlike his other ventures later like Kaal , Dostana etc where he distanced himself from the films and only got involved as a producer.

KANK was definetly had a dream star cast at that time, but K3G had a whole different vibe and way bigger canvas, which I do not think KJo or Bollywood will ever able to match.

Btw Dostana is a monster product of Dharma. I find it laughable when KJo takes pride in making homosexuality "a drawing room conversation" in India through Dostana, when in reality, the film resulted in more homophobia and rather made homophhobic jokes mainstream. Kal Ho Na Ho tames in comparision. If anything, Dostana film did more damage to homosexuals in India (which was criminalized in India at the time of its release) as they became a laughing stock, in an already homphobic country. No amount of Bombay Talkies or Kapoor or Sons is going to undo the damage done by Dostana, I hope KJo realizes that one day.

MNIK is really an outlier in KJo's filmography, and it stands out. Sadly he followed it with SOTY.

I hate SOTY because it turned Kjo into the monster he is today i.e, a nepo kid launchpad. Up until, MNIK he had some kind of credibility. It sucks that GenZ remember him more for SOTY than MNIK.

I disliked Ae Dil Hai Mushkil because the film Ranbir in Ultra Pro Max ManChild role, which was painful to watch. Anushka was trivial. Aishwarya looked like a dream and her role had substance. I don't think I will ever rewatch KJo's work from 2010s,

Finally, Rocky and Rani is finally a step in the right direction, and makes me hopeful for his next films.
