This movie tested my threshold of boredom.
Zoya hacked it big time. The plot was all over the place - saving green park, standing against capitalism, love triangles, press freedom, minority rights, workplace fairness, cooperative spaces yada yada. Pick a lane. Much like KJo for RRPK, Zoya made a laundry list of social issues she wanted incorporated and shoe horned them into the movie even if it felt weird and awkward af. She had one job. All it had to be was interesting, the major chunk of characterizations was already there with the comics.
Coming to performances, easily Vedang wins it. He looked way too much like Ranveer, even the way he spoke. But I loved him. He should be the next big thing in BW if he plays his cards right. Dilton and Jughead were so good. Dot was fab in whatever small role she had. Drumrolls please, because here comes the nepo batch. The worst of the lot was Agastya. I've said this before and I'll say it again, he always looks like he's in some discomfort like he's on his way to the shitter but somebody stopped him and asked him to act. So friggin awkward he is. He makes my old 13 year puberty hit self from the past look like a legend. Khushi acted like she was part robot. Her delivery was awful like she's reading lines off a book that she hadn't read before. She belongs in Alvin and the Chipmunks world. Sorry for being mean, but those teeth and the nose are just so distracting. She's obviously got many surgeries done, so why not correct those teeth and mouth as well?
Suhana was perhaps told to act like Bev Hills snooty girl from GG, but she ended up aping a crossbreed between Malaika and discount Poo. I don't know what rich snooty girl she was playing, but this ain't it. Sometimes it felt like she dropped the guard and was natural in places like the Betty-Ronnie confrontation or the truth and dare game at the lake house, but other than that it all felt too manufactured. That famous scene with her father that everybody's raving about, yeah that sucked balls. She was bad in there.
Set design, costumes and the town (was it shot in Ooty?) were all so pretty but that doesn't compensate for this snooze fest. They should have done away with the love triangle and focused more on Jughead-Ronnie and Dilton-Reggie dynamic. Dot should have had a biggger role. Contrary to popular opinion, I feel all of them very cast well. Archie is the fickle minded redhead who keeps jumping between Betty and Ronnie. Reggie is the arrogant, sarcastic and good looking guy (Vedang wouldn't have suited as Archie). Khushi wouldn't have worked as Ronnie and so would Suhana as Betty. Blaming Zoya for the bad acting is funny, because all of them would have got direction from Zoya herself so how did the outsiders get their parts down to the pat but the nepos couldn't? Either the three are too dumb or just couldn't bother to put in the effort. All in all a waste of a debut.
