Animal Review: Ranbir Kapoor can be Joaquin Phoenix but Animal’s no Joker

Even as Vanga’s take on women or violence unsettle you massively, those are his preferences for a protagonist as a director, and he is free to have them. The issue is lack of purpose in the story. His gun wielding angry young man comes across as a pointless rebel without a cause. What is fueling his fire and the rage within? The father-son discord that forms the crux of the story itself stays unexplored. Barring Ranbir's, the story barely invests in other characters, turning them into silent spectators including the very talented Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol. AK is excellent in the confrontational scenes and Bobby looks menacing, but both get reduced to cardboard characters.

Your wording shows your interpretation of my posts.

Already your first sentence is wrong.

Then:

I'm not "worried" about Mr. Kumar "doing money laundering", I'm suspecting him to do so.

Another member told me about the events that generally take place in South filmindustry (so I learned something new because of my comment).

I was also told that in PVR screenings it is not something special young women putting make up for going to the movies (which I should have considered)...still, I think, that 'public reviews' are for promotion especially when coming very early.

And, dear Snatch (+ maybe others), nothing of all this has a relation to me being a white German woman...

The take-home message from movies like Animal should be that - People like Ranvijay are psychopaths. No matter what they are answerable for their f ups. So, appreciate Ranbir the actor but condemn Ranvijay the psycho. C'mon people. You are adults use your brains

No matter the weepy songs, Ranvijay is not a man to sympathize with. He is not a Hero. He is a villain. A deranged human being. A criminal. Period.

A hero is a firefighter who pulls you out of a burning car. The protagonist is the main character in the story you write about.

Ranvijay is the protagonist. He is NOT THE HERO

NO. He is a deranged human being who deserves first mental asylum and then jail.

I just wonder what you mean with looking "beyond"...but I guess, this is better to discuss in the other thread smiley1

I mean there will be two types of audience. One relates to movies on a personal level - so they will get triggered by the excessive violence and what not show in the movie. There is no way they would like such movies.

The other one watches movies for what they are - stories about fictional characters. They can probably look beyond the objectionable things being shown on screen if the story and script are engaging.

Take Pulp fiction as an example: A lot of people get triggered by the movie because of the excessive drug use, violence, sexual violence shown in the movie, while there is an audience which finds the movie very entertaining and engaging - so much so that its considered a cult classic.

Spoiler Alert:

Animal' Movie Review: Ranbir Kapoor is stellar in problematic, paper-thin film

Sandeep Reddy Vanga's 'Animal' could have been a great father-son love story. Instead, it is driven by one character's whims for over three long hours.

After watching two films by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, you have an idea what you are getting into when you go in for the third one. In fact, the director had promised at the trailer launch that people would deem 'Animal' more problematic than even 'Arjun Reddy' and 'Kabir Singh'. Unfortunately, Vanga over-delivers on his promise. Because 'Animal', in several places, is misogynistic.

Vanga begins the film with a concerning 'joke', giving you a taste of what the rest of the three hours would entail. For instance, in one sequence, Ranbir's Rannvijay threatens Rashmika's character with violence, in another (which we have already seen in the trailer), he chokes her when she questions his erratic behaviour and obesession with his father Balbir Singh, played by Anil Kapoor.

In a nice and ironical touch, there is also a joke about toxicity. In another bit, Ranbir, very 'practically' conveys why he 'loves' Rashmika's Geetanjali, because she can bear healthy children. There is emphasis on domesticity and tradition, and prior to one longish and pivotal fight scene, there is also a hat-tip to the prevailing government as a character flaunts his 'Made in India 'product'.

Ranbir's Rannvijay suffers from intense neglect and he drives that point home like a man-child, something which Vanga pegs as an 'alpha male' trait in the movie. However, credit where credit is due. At least, Vanga, at several points in the film, labels Ranbir's character quite appropriately as a 'criminal.'

One of the highlights of 'Animal' is the fight sequence, where you are required to employ willing suspension of disbelief. Something you are actually required to do at several points in the film. The cuts and transitions are credible as the story follows a non-linear narrative. But the entire plot rests on an age-old story, which is paper-thin to say the least.

The first half is engaging, primarily thanks to a very convincing Ranbir Kapoor, who manages to sell this toxic, annoying, irrational persona of Rannvijay very well. To think what he could have done with a better-written script! There is an apparent lack of female agency. Only Rashmika gets to say a few meaningful things in the feature, which is a definite step-up from Vanga's previous movies.

For those wondering about Bobby Deol, yes, he does make an appearance. However, despite doing his best, the character doesn't really stick due to a poorly written part.

'Animal' could have been a beautiful, meaty father-son love story. Instead, it is driven by its lead character's whims for 200 minutes.

The production value of the film is quite high, the actors do what is required of them, the background score is decent. Everything is almost in place, except for the main requirement of a film -- its story.

2 stars out of 5.

Reading in the other thread, it seems that all the posted reviews come from male viewers... I really wonder how many of the women who will watch this movie will feel as much elated... it also bothers me when I read kind of pot shots using the term "feminists".

But as I can understand the hype and the good feeling about positive reviews, I write this here (it's not fair to disturb the happiness there, that's why I'm grateful for this thread here smiley1)

I think we are living in a time where its cool to take potshots on feminists. I see both men and women do it.
