Ranveer was the soul of the film. His Rocky was funny, ignorant, privileged, but he was always willing to learn, grow annd his heart was always in the right place. His relationships with Kanwal and Ranis father made my heart melt!
I thought out of Rocky and Rani, Rocky was the better written character and Ranveer really put a lot of TLC into Rocky. Rocky also loved Rani more, and the growth of Rocky leading up to standing up to his grandmother was amazing!
Rani came off a little too insta woke for me. Like she had the fat sister in law , the Anupama lite mother in law, parampara obsessed, diabetes poster child in the form of the grandmother, the patriarchal father in law… she had every relevant social cause handed to her on a platter, and she was their ray of hope, which was very TV serial and tropey for me. She came in ready to judge, and ready to fix them to her standards.
Alias family was more nuanced, i wanted to punch someone when they mocked the dancing father. Rocky’s matured approach to Alia’s family and winning them over, specially when the mother says I was wrong about Rocky resonates more.
ps: all the older feel good songs deserve a mention. Well placed songs, at the right moments, helped the narrative and made the movie more engaging
