Also the music is not at the level of past films directed by Karan Johar. The plus of the film is Alia Bhatt and also summer has seen the box office do better than say where we were a few months back.

Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar had an opening close to 14 crore nett on day one but that is with Holi Holiday so fair value is around the 11 crore nett mark. There is a big difference between Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh but that difference should be counteracted by Alia Bhatt and also a better period. Both films also have similar budgets which are high for the genre but both films are pre pandemic films in terms of start and at that time the genre had more potential theatrically so were budgeted accordingly.

Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani Has Decent Advances

Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani is seeing decent advances which will end pretty much in the same range as Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar on the first day which is a similar zone film. That film was a Holi holiday release so collections may run slower on the day for Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani but overall it has seen a decent response so far. The national chains should finish at around 70k for the first day and an overall advance of 5 crore nett apprx for the weekend.

The genre does make it tough as today it is difficult to get much of a start out of this genre and on top you have the hero coming off disaster films. Also the music is not at the level of past films directed by Karan Johar. Eventually the film was always going to be dependent on word of mouth as its never getting a huge opening but the fear is always that the opening comes out too low and it becomes hard for word of mouth to do a rescue act. This should not be any issue with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani as it should get into double digits and the question will be can the film go on from there.

The film is likely to score better overseas as advances there are better. This genre was seen as overseas friendly but that has all changed now as a film like Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 does more business than Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and Jug Jugg Jeeyo. The final number will be a lot dependent on Gulf as its hard to say which way it will go here and it forms a huge chunk of the overseas business. The target for the film will be to be the third best post pandemic overseas grosser after Pathaan and Brahmastra. Pre pandemic you would set $10 million as a minimum benchmark but now even overseas its action and bigger cinema which is the front runner in terms of box office.
