I also remember Gadar winning all polls online on Rediff, Indiatimes in comparison to Lagaan.

Rather Lagaan became more popular after Oscar nom.

It did become a big hit and was loved more by critics and was indeed a better made film with good message and patriotism.

But Gadar scored over all films that year in terms of sheer popularity among masses. Dark horse of that year.

Even multi starrer like K3G could not outdo it in India.

In North India, Gadar was like a wildfire. Unstoppable.

Here is something coming from the horse’s own mouth. It’s interesting how Sunny and Aamir have clashed not once but thrice and all the three times both of them have won gold at the BO. That’s what happens when two good movies come together. They boost the enthusiasm of the viewers and lure them to the cinemas in hoards. It’s ridiculous how the whole movie watching culture has been degraded to the euphoria of the first 3 days , and movies’ fates being decided in these 3 days.

Whenever Sunny and Aamir clashed, the better movie lost the clash.😆

You think so? Ghayal and Ghatak were better than Dil and Raja Hindustani. No? Lagaan is definitely more loaded and better than Gadar but Gadar is no less. Like Aamir rightly said, if either of the movies was even one percent less than the other, they wouldn’t have been able to make it.

On a side note, I fell in love with Amrish Puri in Gadar and Ghatak. Do we have anyone who can claim to have taken his legacy forward?

Ghayal and Ghatak were better movies. But Dil and Raja Hindustani made more money.

Third time Aamir made a classic with Lagaan, but Sunny gave a box office juggernaut with Gadar.

In all three clashes none of the movies flopped and all were big Hits. Dil was highest grosser of 1990, but Ghayal was the second highest grosser. Raja Hindustani was ATBB, but Ghatak was Super Hit. Gadar was all time highest grosser and ATBB, but Lagaan was also Hit and third highest grosser of 2001.

Also however Aamir beat Sunny two out of three times, the actresses in Dil and Raja Hindustani also deserve credit for the success of those movies. Madhuri was the bigger star in Dil. Karisma was equally popular to Aamir when Raja Hindustani came out. But in Ghayal, Ghatak and Gadar it was all Sunny Deol.

In present scenario clashes do eat business. Therefore Gadar 2 Vs Animal is a bad idea. The only way this clash would benefit the movies is that both films are crap and this clash is to generate hype. Otherwise they are definitely going to effect each other's business and not perform upto their potential (if they are well made films).

About Amrish Puri, he was great in Ghayal, Ghatak and Gadar. I don't know who is the villain in Gadar 2, but nobody can fill his shoes.

The era of classic villains ended with him in the early 2000s. After that we had some like Boman Irani in Raju Hirani movies, or Prakash Raj in masala movies. But they were very different kind of villains. Since 2000s villains were not depicted in a very powerful way who is giving tough time to the hero. Not counting Dhoom villains who were more like anti-heroes.

The trend of action masala movies came back in 2010s, but in these modern movies villains were depicted more like comedians and the movies were all about showcasing the heroism and style of the hero who faces no setbacks. Although some exceptions are there like Sonu Sood in Dabangg.

Both Dil and RH have aged badly. RH I never liked it the first time around itself when I watched it on TV. I think their music and romance took them ahead of their superior counterparts. I knew about Ghayal but never heard of Ghatak or may have confused it with one of the several movies of Sunny starting with letter G. I only watched it this week for the first time and simply blown away by the movie, especially Sunny’s acting, action, dialogue delivery and overall performances of every cast especially Amrish Puri. More importantly, it aged so well. Ghayal toh is a known classic but Ghatak definitely was a pleasant surprise . I was surprised to know that the role was meant for Kamal Hassan and to think Sunny fit into the shoes meant for Kamal Hassan. 🙌

I realized action movies those days were different from what we see these days. These days action scenes are more like another piece of choreography with a lot of CGI thrown in while those days action movies meant real business with the Hero working the hardest amongst the whole cast. Poor Sunny literally was the one who got most beaten up, most sweaty, most bloody plus he also had to make sure he looked good while delivering punches and punchline dialogs. I am not the one to like hard action movies but I felt his movies have a good balance of action+romance with some real conflict thrown in.But yeah it’s understandable why it could get exhaustive to both the actor as well as the viewers, after a while.

Yes unfortunately there is no replacement for Amrish Puri so they have ended the genre only. Now we have heroes hogging all the main characters, may be very soon they will even replace the female leads and take cinema back to the ice age. We already have male singers singing most of the female background songs anyway.😆

Like I was saying in my previous post, the movie watching culture has become super strange and contrived now. Regardless of how many crores and hard work it took to make an movie, its fate is decided in 3 days. Some good movies win but a lot of good movies get lost in this madness. What if both Gadar and Animal and in fact all the three movies including OMG are good? What are the chances of all of them winning at the same time?

Romance as a genre appealed more than action to the general audience in the 90s. Top 3 highest grossing films HAHK, DDLJ and Raja Hindustani were all romantic movies with chartbuster music. Although action movies did have its cult fanbase as many action heroes were also famous in this decade and Sunny was at the top.

Ghatak was also a delayed movie. I think it was supposed to release in 1992 before Damini. But the movie came out in 1996. So it looked dated and Meenakshi was a retired actress by then. Even today when you watch the film it feels like it came out before 1996. Still the movie one of the biggest Hits of the year.

The stylized modern action movies which came in trend since 2010s were inspired by South films. Before that Bollywood audience found such OTT action movies ridiculous.😆

Since the multiplex era started, most movies success depended on the weekend business only, as films released all over India in large number of screens at the same time. Clashes started eating collections because producers goal became to get maximum business on first three days itself like you said. It resulted in movies only with Superstars and hype becoming huge grossers.

Today its just not possible for a debutante to give HGOTY like Hrithik did it with KNPH. There are movies which solely work on WOM, and there is even a term called "word-of-mouth films". But those type of movies don't make a lot of money and become Hits because of low budget.

OMG 2 will have to move. Akshay won't get screens and would have no choice but to postpone. Gadar 2 would open huge. I bet it would be far more than Animal. But Anil Sharma is outdated director. In front of him its Vanga so Animal likely would be a far better film. If Gadar 2 is poor then Animal would get ahead in lifetime business with word of mouth.

Gadar 2 and Animal can both be great movies. If they are then both would be Hits, but won't make as much money as they would have with a solo release. They're fighting for Independence Day holiday which makes me doubt they both are actually crap films and makers just want to earn as much money as possible before word of mouth kicks in.
