Particularly in Punjab, Gadar was ruling the charts.

I also remember Gadar winning all polls online on Rediff, Indiatimes in comparison to Lagaan.

Rather Lagaan became more popular after Oscar nom.

It did become a big hit and was loved more by critics and was indeed a better made film with good message and patriotism.

But Gadar scored over all films that year in terms of sheer popularity among masses. Dark horse of that year.

Even multi starrer like K3G could not outdo it in India.

In North India, Gadar was like a wildfire. Unstoppable.

I am not a Punjabi but I think Gadar1 was the most well presented movie about Punjab, the Punjabis( on both sides of the border pre-partition era ) and their struggles during/post partition without making it too jingoistic. Hope Gadar2 too keeps that balance and not go OTT on any fronts. And of course the soundtrack, it will be interesting to see if they will be able to at least maintain the quality of the original.I don’t mind a reprisal of the entire soundtrack or at least of main nikla and oh ghar aaja pardesi.etc.

Gadars music became big after the film became a massive blockbuster, not before. Pre release Lagaans music was ruling the charts/radio waves. Mitra, Radha, Ghanan Ghanan, Chalo.....literally every song. Infact, Lagaan was Sold on the AR Rahman + Javed Akhtar combo. It was on every poster. Distinctively remember this, even as a child. 😆

Totally agree with this. Gadar songs were practically unheard of before the movie released, unlike the ARR’s Lagaan songs. Yes the soundtrack helped the movie catapult itself further but ultimately it was the story, the taking and Sunny Deol which brought in the crowds.

Most of the soundtracks used to sell after the movies become popular, unless the Music Director was a superstar in his own right like in the case of ARR.

Teaser looks jaded and crap.

Lahore dialogue is for Punjabis who have still not forgotten it was capital of Maharaja Ranjit Singh empire. So the makers are aware of fantasies of getting back Lahore someday.

Dialogue was regressive AF with stuff on dahej or nariyal etc.

Looks dead on arrival no matter how much it is trending on YouTube.

Who is singing Ghar aaja pardesi? Is that Arijit? Why not Udit? That dull voiced Arijit can never match original.

To those who stated the first Gardar did a great job potraying Punjabis one both sides of the border. 😃

Lived realities are more important than articles and comparing Gadar to CDI is a joke by the writer.

Gadar music was popular. Especially Udja kaale kaawa. It was a chart topper in Top 10 countdowns and wildly popular in Punjab, Delhi, HP, Haryana belt.

Even before release.

Lagaan had no hype in North. Nor does North belt have craze for ARR or Javed.

ARR is hyped only by rest of India, especially South.

World knows his music takes time to grow on people. He has never been an instant hit except for maybe Rangeela, Roja, Dil se, RDB.

But I know why some people feel butthurt at Gadar and undermine its success and resent its popularity.

Or are irked at its sequel.

Anyway Sunny as sardar always got hits. Border catapulted him to new league.

Only his Jo Bole so nihal and Singh saab the great failed. Otherwise he was always lapped up whenever he played a sardar. More so in North India.
