So what is the solution?

That even ones in power cannot speak up?

I am not saying one should be compelled to come out.

Can they not give even neutral statements like there should be no bias?

Anyway I do understand where you are coming from and pressure to keep silent. Pressure from PR companies must also be there.

I still hope they are supporting the cause and NGOs on this behind the scenes. Like donations or something. Hopefully.

If an actor or actress comes out as gay or lesbian or bi, they won't be desirable. Girls won't go Gaga over them neither boy will go Gaga our girls. Even straight men and women will bash them and look down upon them. It might cost them their career. Who'd take this chance?

Ppl fight for marriage when u want to spend ur whole life with one person.. Otherwise marriage makes things complicated like child rights, property rights, domestic violence etc..

Many not be even in favor of marriage.

As archaic as marriage is as an institution, it is precisely these benefits that largely makes people marry each other. There are very few who get married out of love. With marriage comes spousal insurance, property rights, childcare rights (lgbtq+ couples can't adopt kids since marital rights are not recognised hence no passing of wealth), spousal pension and many other benefits. This was one of the points made during hearings.

So well said.

It pains me to see pogrom convicts being acquitted and rapists also out on bail or getting parole or acquitted.

I totally understand festivals part.

Anyway I was not saying we should out anyone. But ones who are there, can probably use their resources to speak. I still hope they are supporting or donating for the cause behind the scenes and have the backs of their fellow LGTBQIA brethren in this case and movement for their rights.

I deeply admire courage of likes of Onir to speak out.

I feel bad how Kapil show caricatured K Jo and gay characters. It is okay to mock them but not okay to speak for their rights and legitimacy of their existence? The double standards of entertainment industry are hideous.

I agree on cowards part. They are cowards. Especially ones in South Asia. Hollywood ones still speak sometimes even if they get backlash.

I feel like Bollywood celebs lack incentive to voice their opinion. They'd much rather be in the good books of the ruling party since their movies doing well in theatres is directly correlated to their imagined friendship with people in power. Of the few who do speak out, they are branded all sorts of names and feel the repercussions in their career. Others are tone deaf, who I'd rather they not speak at all (looking at Sonam here) 😆

The young crop of actors are so bland and devoid of personality that their world revolves around gym selfies and who's dating who. It's always the older artists raising their voice against social issues. Always. And this is not good at all.

I am not asking them to come out and declare their orientation. That is their own choice.

Though I respect ones who do come out openly.

I was talking about speaking in support of rights of sexual minorities in some way. They are silent. I hope they support the cause clandestinely though.

No one asks or expects straight people to declare their sexual preference why should the rules be different for LGBTQ people? It's their personal matter and totally upto them if they want to discuss their preferences or not. No one should be pressured into doing anything.

What if many don't relate to it? Or even be homophobic.? People can be homosexuals yet be homophobic. Also Bollywood or in general entertainment industry is usually in a bubble of their own and don't really stand up for anything if it doesn't benefit them. All of them are vain and selfish.

The way LGBTQ people are depicted in Bollywood itself should give you that answer .

One's sexual orientation and romantic life are private matters. No one needs to come out about their sexual orientation or relationship status.

The day-to-day life of a minority, underrepresented, or oppressed group is full of exhausting emotional labor. They don't need to add to it with another battle.

And as for Bollywood stars with wealth and power not speaking up - why aren't sports stars worshipped by everyone speaking up? Why aren't politicians elected to represent people speaking up? Why aren't billionaires who have everyone else in their pockets speaking up? No one wants to risk their empire. At least with movements like "Boycott Bollywood" and what happened to Aryan Khan, there are legitimate reasons why Bollywood stars don't want to take the risk.

At least for me, with recent movies and shows that represent LGBTQ folks, Bollywood has spoken up. It's damn time the rest speak up.
