Telugu cinema toh I have followed regularly after that. I do avoid movies starring the super bigwigs (Nagarjuna, Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh, Ravi Teja etc, even Mahesh Babu 😆). Nani, Ram, Allu Arjun, Nithin, Charan etc sab chalte hain. Could never bring myself to like Tarak though, tried very hard.

I hate watching dubbed versions though, so stick to subtitles. In turn, I was introduced to so many lovely songs, which I would have forwarded for sure coz of awful dubbing.

Hey do you have any link of Aarya 2 in telugu with subtitles? I have watched it many times in hindu dubbed version, but never found one with english subtitles, I just want to watch the original version too along with the songs.

Sai Pallavi ❤️❤️- that girl is a powerhouse, she is such an amazing actress, great dancer and so charming irl. I have no doubt that if she gets good opportunity in BW movies too she would easily become a pan India superstar like Sridevi.

Vijay Sethupathi Another fantastic actor. I truly believe he can do any role, from a menacing villain to a romantic lead in a simple love story like 96 to a transgender.

Thanks for the suggestions. Read the descriptions and wow those films touch some sensitive and bold topics. I guess 80s film makers were revolutionary and the audience at that time were mature enough to accept those topics. I know that Malayalam films of that period too tackled some bold topics like incest,infidelity,age-inappropriate attraction with sensitivity and grace. You might like director I.V.Sasi's films like Eeta with Kamal Haasan or Lakshmana Rekha with Mammootty and Mohanlal.

We'd like to believe that strong women in cinema is a recent phenomenon. But all these films prove that women have been making strong choices all along. And that top male stars of that time had no ego problems taking these roles.

I recently saw Meenakshi Sheshadri's Swati movie which is a remake of a Telugu hit

The movie must've been absolutely revolutionary for the 80s, she is a daughter of a single Mom, unwed mother, so she makes arrangements for her mother's remarriage after she grows up

But, even then the movie has distributing 80s trends like showing a rape scene for titillation, and in the end a voice over reads "Aurat hamesha Maa hothi hai, duniya ki Maa hothi hai" something like that

Didn't understand what that meant or what that's got to do with the story

But still the plot wasxrevolutionary considering it was the 80s

Isn't that the Sharmila Tagore one? It's on my list. Meenakshi is as good as Madhuri but didn't get as many memorable characters. I guess all those male film makers who make female-led films have that subconscious bias to make the heroine a goddess - either a mother goddess or an avenging goddess. Just like Lajja or Rekha's Khoon Bhari Maang.

Regional cinema seems to have made revolutionary films in the 80s. Eeta which I mentioned in my earlier post has Kamal Haasan, a teenager being seduced by a divorced woman in her 20s. Lakshmana Rekha has a younger brother seducing his paralyzed elder brother's wife. They all grew up together as children and he had silently borne his love as his elder brother and the heroine were childhood sweethearts. Avalude Ravukal tells the tale of a prostitute. All these films raised no eyebrows and the director I.V. Sasi was equally known for making films about the rise and fall of trade unions.

Yes, Sharmila Tagore plays the mother. Meenakhi is In her peak, look wise, she's so pretty in this movie and could be her best performance too, with the possible exception of Damini

All the movies you mentioned are Malayalam movies right? No wonder, Mollywood has always been different from the rest of the Woods of the country

I've seen a few, they were great but they mostly seemed to have sad ending

Yes those are all Malayalam movies from the 80s. I was comparing them with the Telugu movies of director Balachander which apernauma recommended and those seem pretty controversial too. So Regional film makers were feeling rebellious at the time. And the audience were supporting their experiments with enthusiasm.

Malayalam films have a penchant for sad endings. Which is why many of the Malayalam to Hindi remakes like Salman's Kyom Ki and Jackie Shroff's Gardish didn't find much box-office success from the Hindi audience(though Gardish was appreciated). As children we were constantly admonished that "Life is a Malayalam film, not a Hindi film". Which seemed a very bleak aspect compared to the joy which Hindi films spread.
