Episode 29 Review (I will keep editing this)

TB or to TB is about perspectives and this is my perspective.

This is a story of trials for Khan Murtasim Khan to earn his wife’s love. Hercules had to pass all his 12 labors to reach atonement. Murtasism must pass only once, and every time he fails the next trial get harder. In episode 29 we will watch him fail second time. Meerab fate is tied to Murtasim, when he fails she will suffer with him. The journey of episode 29 with the ‘jump/promise’ is Murtasim’s attempt to amend their wedding vows.

Their original wedding vows, he promised her she will have first right over herself even before him, and she promised him she will place him ahead of herself. He said her vow was a sazaa for her, he didn’t know then that this would backfire on him, and it would become his sazaa.

In episode 29 both Murtasim and Meeerab will not realize that they made each other live through the worst trauma of their lives. For Murtasim it is when Meerab was kidnapped and for Meerab it is the abandonment of her fake parents.

When KMK fired that gun, the husband temporarily checked out, and didn’t check in back in till the end of episode. Now comes Meerab’s test as a wife, she has always been able to calm him down when in anger, but can she comfort him when he is emotionally disturbed. She plays three roles in this episode, one of a goddess, a nurturer, and a wife.

The episode starts with Murtasim pretending like he shot himself to induce panic from his wife, Nautanki. This brings us back to Meerab’s first car accident, 2 things struck me (First thing addressed now, Second later). He runs to her in panic cups her face in concern and she does the same thing for him. In everything and anything they will mirror each other. However, look at his response time, he was out of his car in a flash to get to her, but she is paralyzed with fear that she lost him and doesn’t run to him immediately.

Murtasim loves his wife so much that he has learnt Meerabish, now using it against her as he spouts gibberish about Sasta Salman in anger. He is packing to leave, and Meerab asks what about me 4 bloody times, this is her giving him consent to take her, but MK the husband has gone tata bye bye in his anger. This is the second time in their marriage he doesn’t understand her tearful eyes are pleading him to not abandon her, he throws her ‘meri marzi’ back in her face and storms off. The shock and pain on her face reflected as he unintentionally made her relive her parents’ abandonment all over again. She needed his assurance here that even in the abyss he will not leave her, and he failed her a second time. He wasn’t giving her agency of consent to follow him, instead he forgot his promise of ‘kabin Nahin’ as he let go of her hand.

But our girl is a fighter she dusted herself off, picked herself up and ran after her man. That ‘kabin Nahin’ was a two-way promise, she is not letting go just yet. She learned from before that his goooooooo doesn’t meant go away, she needs to stand her ground and fight back. Her plea to him that she didn’t come to Karachi to meet Sasta Salman (SS), WRONG ANSWER that is not why he is angry. The frown and the arch of his eyebrows, he stares perturbed at her clueless face, yes Mr. Khan your wife is a duffod.

Rain is a symbol of many things, but in the context of this scene it is a symbol of calmness, which is Meerab. This her first role in this episode, as a goddess she calls forth divine intervention to calm down the situation. She looks up at the sky and he only looks at her, she is his sukoon, the one he seeks to quell his rage. Rain forces them both to head for cover, a temporary retreat from battle.

Murtasim thinks rain are his tears, but they are really Meerab’s tranquility. She doesn’t like being ignored by her husband, but she keeps giving him the wrong answer again and again regarding SS and he tells her to shut up. It rains all the way through their drive keeping a lid on KMK rage, he won’t crash the car again and Meerab knows when to stay silent, they both don’t make the same mistakes twice they will just make new ones.

There is role reversal here with Meerab in the protective role as she follows concerned behind her disheveled husband back inside the house. Murtasim obviously will never tell his mother anything, but he sneers at ‘chori pakadi gayi’. This is the first time since their marriage he has mocked the wife he idolizes openly, reflection of how deeply hurt he is. MK the husband makes a brief appearance here, when Meerab talks about how they stole her haq and she just drifts aimlessly to keep herself engaged. This is the salvation of his great love for her, he can temporarily ignore her pain but never forget it, his eyes dim as he thinks of her loss, but he is not ready to move on just yet. Meerab is looking for Murtasim, he won’t answer her calls now, ignoring her, her ‘baad mei jao’ lasts for even lesser time than his anger.

To Bed or not To Bed

It is nighttime now whether they share the bed or not is irrelevant to the intimacy level they share, because regardless of which side you argue the answer is the same. She opens her eyes she subconsciously looks to the empty side of the bed, did he used to sleep there before or does she wish he did, answer is the same she will always seek him out.

She is sleeping on the very edge of her side of the bed, one roll and thud she is on the floor. When they shared the bed in episode 20 (hands hands episode) she eventually turned to his side, she didn’t sleep on the edge of a cliff. The answer is the same, no matter where he slept, she will move closer to his side subconsciously, and since he is on the sofa tonight she is on the edge closer to where he is.

She can’t sleep if he is not comfortable, she covers him up and her touch wakes him up or he was never asleep to begin with. She stares at his dishevelled appearance he didn’t even change for bed, nope this can’t go on she is going to put a stop to his antics NOW. His eyes open to seek her out, his inner peace returns as he sighs and goes back to sleep. In his half sleepy state looks like he forgot he was upset with her.

If I saw this scene in isolation, I wouldn’t even know they were fighting. Just another normal night for MeMu where Meerab watches over him, makes him comfortable and tucks him to sleep. He wakes up to look at her, he can’t sleep until he gets that care from her. Murtasim does this many times before he looks at her and sighs, it is like a drowning man coming up for air.

Her morning habits are telling, when she wakes up, she is used to seeing him and knowing where he is, but now the routine is broken, and she takes her irritation out on the maid.

Meerab and Anwar conversation addresses her POV regarding her husband and herself. Meerab trusts Murtaism to not discuss their private affairs with anyone. Meerub resents being reduced to just being MK’s wife as her own individuality is destroyed. MK’s wife has no right to talk to Sasta Salman but Meerab does, and Meerab is fighting back to keep that part of herself alive. And lastly anyone wants to know anything about her don’t ask her just please ask husband, even Meerab accepts Murtasim knows her best.

He was a dishevelled mess at night and now she is a mess. Her second role in this episode as she becomes the nurturer. She puts her comfort aside, prioritizes him and doesn’t change or clean herself up before going to cook for him. Meerab’s Biriyani for lunch ends up as uneaten dinner, what a waste. I felt sad for her excited face she was so proud of herself. Post Walima during the first hug and at the dance, Murtasim brings up the cigarette lighter and candle respectively symbolizing his passion for her. But now Meerab lights twin candles representing them both, and the candles are reduced in size by the time husband shows up. She waited 8 hours and doesn’t even get upset when he comes late, showing her patient side.

For Murtasim anytime food and Meerab are mentioned in the same sentence he subconsciously touches his stomach, things we sacrifice for love, no wonder he didn’t appear for lunch he wanted to escape potential stomach pain. Murtasim never eats without his wife, in his anger he is only punishing himself. He knows he is hurting her and is the first to cry. Meerab even used her tears against him to get him to fold, she knows her husband weakness, but he is not budging.

But Murtasim is making progress he doesn’t storm off like he usually does when his emotions overwhelm him, he turns back and asks her does she realize what she put him through for those 30 minutes she was with Sticky Notes. Nurturer is gone and boss wife is back, Alpha Meerab grabs him by the jacket makes him listen to her. Meerab reiterates SS took her by force and Murtasim gulps down his anger, his eyes are filled with concern, fear, and tears. Meerab’s Murtasim is coming back to her, he looks like he wishes he killed SS, hisabh is not barabhar. But Meerab screwed up when she says besides he is my classmate why can’t I meet him it is not a big deal, BUSTED wrong choice of words. She confessed what he suspected all along. He snaps he will show her what is the difference between ‘kitni choti aur kitni badi baath’.

To Be Contiued………..

I look forward to your review every single time….the magic you create with words is sth else….❤️❤️❤️❤️

I love you more for writing these (in bold). You have a way with words,my girl! It's truly beautiful!

I know a lot has been spoken about the terrace scene and the ISQH waala one but this "Packing" scene is my absolute favorite! This tense scene worked so beautifully because of the rich subtext! And u r bang-on with ur analysis..just superb Gundam!

One a side note, does he go back into the house again to see if she is coming or not? 'coz I dont see him with his luggage when he steps out of the house.

This vm hits differently now after reading ur analysis :)

He asked her to jump because he knows she didn’t put up a real struggle from going with SS. If someone asks you to do something stupid or dangerous, you fight back not comply”

I know a lot of people thought he asked her to jump to prove ber character.. even hassan and amna (just saw their review today)

But he never doubted her character, ive said it before, if murtasim ever doubted her character, he would have left her then and there!! This was never about proving her character and i loved how you explained it ❤️❤️❤️

Waiting for the other parts to officially give you your Phd title..

Meerab is damn irritating. She doesn’t use her brains, she has over done her anger. She is blind to all efforts Murtasim is putting in their relationship. I am not saying that she should love him because he does, but be considerate (a little )

Jump Now or Promise Me is the new ‘We need to rewrite our wedding vows’ (MeMu code decipher mode activated)

My theory is an alternate reason to ‘I wanted to put the fear of death in her, so she can feel a pinch of what I felt in those 30 mins'.

What does Murtasim learn in that conversation with Saba his wife doesn’t have her phone with her, another man is going to keep her for days, and this stranger will release her only on his accord. For Murtasim to doubt her character he must believe at least one of the following three statements are happening with his wife’s consent. Meerab is deliberately not answering his calls, she is completely cool with staying over at another man’s place for a few days as if it is a picnic, and his Jhansi ki rani wife will only leave when this man allows her to. Yeaaaaahhhhhhhhhh if he believed if she is capable of any one of the above crimes then he wouldn’t worship her, he would have just shot her on spot. So, the jump wasn’t a question of her character.

Listening to that phone conversation you don’t need to be a genius to figure out that Sasta Salman is nefarious, any normal caring husband would go into panic. KMK is not your average husband, 30 mins since that conversation and getting to Sasta Salman place he must have died 1000 times over. He relived that kidnapping nightmare all over again. He comes with a gun expecting the worst only to realize for 30 mins Meerab spent talking to sticky notes SERIOUSLYYYYYY. He is angry that she allowed herself to be conned to listen to SS blasphemy, putting his disgust aside how is that worth her life and his life, as she is his life now. He is relieved nothing happened, but what if she tried to escape and got hurt, how dare she put herself in that predicament.

The way he says jump so casually, it is too methodical, it wasn’t a spontaneous command, he thought about it and wanted to achieve something BUT WHAT. It is a process of elimination; is he doubting her character NO, is he a psychopath NO, is he testing her gymnastic skills NO, he wants her to be afraid hmmmmm deliberate cruelty towards her is not him NO. Besides what does that achieve he gets nothing out of it, in fact she being afraid of him is the last thing he wants even though he says otherwise. The answer lies in what does he fear the most?

He asked her to jump because he knows she didn’t put up a real struggle from going with SS. If someone asks you to do something stupid or dangerous, you fight back not comply. He knows she is a fighter that is why he can’t believe she got tricked that easily. Him asking her to ‘jump now’ is like Sticky Notes asking her to get into his car. Meerab thought about the police she didn’t want her family involved, she thought of Murtasim anger, but ultimately, she allowed herself to be coerced because she wanted to give her friend Sasta Salman a chance. But where is Meerab in all of this, she didn’t consider herself at all, her safety and her respect nope didn’t even cross her mind. This is not a choti baath for KMK, his begum, his ‘meri jaan’ jeopardizes her life for the sake of a fiendish male friend.

Meerab being Meerab just climbs up on the ledge. The shock and regret on his face, duffod biwi. She is breaker of norms, the first time he wants her to spar back against him she does the opposite, he misses his pool side dheet wife when did she become this obedient. Jump is like that slap metaphorically, where once he used violence to stop her from harming herself, here he tried to play mind games, but nothing works on his begum. When she doesn’t row back like he expected her to he moves to plan B. He has never commanded anything of her in this marriage, whenever he asks her to do something he says please. No more pleases KMK now demands a promise, ‘you can’t meet that man again’. He dictates that she doesn’t ever put herself in harm’s way again. It sounds simple but he means a lot more, he wants control over her.

What else could he have asked for, promise me that you will never leave me or promise me that you love no one else, this sounds important but are not his fears. His only worry has always been the same since the first episode is that he will lose her because of her foolishness.

Did she understand what he really meant by the jump? Nope. Whatever the reason is it is irrelevant to her, her trust in him is so deep that she will comply with this preposterous test because she knows he won’t let her fall. The way she clasped his hand and leaned onto him for support, her touch and love are his lighthouse, wife is calling him home and the way he looks at her Meerab’s Murtasim is back. He blinks, it is his language of love, he falls in love with her all over again. She gives him more than what he bargained for. He already gave up his life to her without her asking, but now she has given him her life.

Murtasim with demand of the promise is attempting to amend his OG wedding vow. He seeks to have first right over her, since she is not wise enough to know best. But Meerab blocks his move and smartly added an addendum to her vow, I won’t worry about myself that is your job. She gave up everything without losing nothing.

She walks ahead of him, and he is back in position behind her in his protective role again. But now she is angry why. He is her hero of consent, and in his fear and anger he was trying to re-negotiate his oath. He assured her she won’t become a prisoner as his wife. His intention is to protect her, but Meerab is losing her identity as Murtasim attempts to swallow up her life to keep her safe. She storms off to let him eat by himself. She is not going back to the terrace; she knows her bedroom is downstairs. In the end you see him close his eyes exasperated and he fears the future. He has read the future script he knows he is screwed; a man must accept his fate. They both go to bed hungry, but they have reached a truce.

@bold the best explanation of the jump scene and the real explanation for me😆

“Their deficiencies are she is a naïve idealist, and he forgets his promises when angry” This pretty much sums it!!! She cant see past her idealism and him his anger..

Life is teaching Meerab lessons, and Meerab is teaching Murtasim. This is how i feel as well, i know the writer and director said, TB is about meerab learning and teaching her a lesson but she is also teaching and changing him for the better ❤️

Therefore, they have no choice but to separate, if he won’t allow it, then too bad destiny will force his hand to decide what is ultimately in both their best interests.

Im sure separation will come from his anger, he will say something he will regret but then she will have left. But i know they will each other again ❤️

Lovely analysis as always ❤️

Murtasim and Meerab fears and solution?

Khan Murtasim Khan idolizes his begum, she is his conscience and guide, but expects she adheres to the rules and expectations of being his wife, they live by a code, and she is no exception. Murtasim the husband loves his Meerab, she is his guardian, lover, and friend, he can forgive her anything and only demands she doesn’t put herself in harm’s way as his life is in her hands.

Mrs Khan admires lord KMK accepts him as he is, he is her hero. Lord KMK can kill whomever she is there to empty his gun, he can get angry all he wants she will pacify him and will allow him to drag her around like a rag doll she will follow, but she will not be ignored. She demands her voice be heard; he doesn’t have to agree with her, but she will not be cast aside as an ornament. Meerab the wife loves her husband, he is her home and purpose in life, they will be best friends forever, but she demands her husband keep his promises. She will accept any punishment from him if she screws up, but he can’t let her go in his anger as her life is in his hands.

Meerab and Murtasim are both battling the same fears that they will lose each other because of each other’s weaknesses. Their deficiencies are she is a naïve idealist, and he forgets his promises when angry. Murtasim tashan dialogues ‘mera andar ka jaanwar’, ‘mujh se daro’, ‘tum meri Qayamat seh nahi paogi’ reflects that he is self-aware that anger is his kryptonite, and he can hurt her if she crosses his bottom line. His bottom line are two things one she doesn’t put herself in danger and the other is KMK janahsheen ki biwi must live by certain edicts and he will not compromise on them not even for her. But Meerab is not as self-aware, she thinks she is smarter than she really is and that frightens Murtasim. There is nothing more dangerous than a misguided revolutionary, just ask the French.

She doesn’t have the power to leave him, that authority resides with him as he anchors their marriage to its existence. But she is the mast of their sail ship that gives their life stability, purpose, and direction and if she can’t steady the ship, they both drown. The solution lies in Meerab’s advancement, only when she drops the naivety from her idealism will they both survive the stormy waters of life. She will always remain idealistic but become more wiser in how she deploys it. You can only gain wisdom by making mistakes in life but how can she do that with Murtasim around.

This Sasta Salman track was the perfect opportunity for her to learn some valuable life lessons, but she didn’t because Murtaism got in the way with his herogiri. If he showed up late to SS place, and if SS made any moves on her she would have used her handbag to send him into a coma, story over, but we will never know now, and sticky notes is still sticking around. Because of his fear of losing her he is stopping her from maturing and becoming the woman he admires. Whatever vision he has of her is only in theory, she is not there yet in reality, and he is her biggest roadblock.

This takes me back to the second point of the first Meerab car accident. Did Murtasim inadvertently cause that accident in a desperate attempt to save her, why was he racing her in the car down the road? His instincts when she is in danger is almost always on point, but they are also stopping her from growing up. Protecting her is in his DNA and by doing so he is stifling her growth. Him canceling her right to make mistakes and change, ultimately which is why he will lose her.

You can call it domination, but Murtasim knows he has no control over her that is why he is always in an overprotective panic mode. He tried to gain authority over her by trying to rewrite his wedding vows in the jump/promise scene, but she didn’t let him, she gave him her life, but he can’t reign over her. He is a fool, no promise he will beg of her is going to keep her safe permanently under his wing, life finds a way. He casts a large shadow and under him she will remain naïve and thus will get hurt.

This is the paradox for his character he of all people wants her to be become wiser, but he doesn’t know how to facilitate this change. He is scared in the process of shedding her innocence she will do irreparable damage to herself and the family. He recognizes that her past trauma might never fully heal, and he doesn’t want her to suffer another wound from which even his love can’t fix. And what he fears most on top of losing her is that he will be the one to hurt her out of anger. He will eventually realize his mistake but by then it will too late, and he knows her best she doesn’t forgive easily. First time he broke his commitment she forgave him, and he assured her his pledge of eternal love, second time he turnd his back she forgave him again and made him remember his past promises, what will happen a third time?

Anger blocked Murtasim oaths long enough for him to have almost lost her, it was she who chased him down. What would happen if she didn’t? His anger will soon prove fatal to their marriage. The first time he let her go post the second car accident Maryam saved him, the second time he left her post SS his wife chased after him, the third time he fails who is going to save him?

Murtasim wants her to evolve without getting hurt, but life doesn’t work like that, and he can’t be the one who teaches her, life will teach her. By stopping her from maturing, he is also stopping his own enlightenment. They are mirrors of each other if she is evolving then he too transforms with her. He is learning from her how to live the best life, how to respect all and how to fulfill his love for her. Life is teaching Meerab lessons, and Meerab is teaching Murtasim.

Murtasim has two choices but only one choice is right for both. First choice Meerab is forced to give him everything he wants, becomes a prisoner of this marriage but he loses what makes her unique and he destroys what he loves about her. His second choice is he allows her to grow up, make mistakes, forgive her fallacies and she becomes the woman he reveres. If she remains under his protection the second option will not happen. Therefore, they have no choice but to separate, if he won’t allow it, then too bad destiny will force his hand to decide what is ultimately in both their best interests.
