This is what I thought too. Madhuri was hands down most popular actress of 90s and almost every kid mentioned her as their fav and her songs from even flops became chart toppers.

How was Madhuri fading in 90s when she gave huge hits like Dil, Beta, HAHK, DTPH, Raja and songs from even flops like Anjaam, Yaarana like Chane ke khet mein, Piya ghar aaya were hits?

Kajol was nowhere near MD in 90s. Can be called a close second especially after hits like DDLJ, KKHH, PKTDK, PTHHT.

Kajol honestly hardly had star power on her own and usually relied on Khans, YRF, Dharma to sail her boat. I would even say she would not be remembered if not for her jodi with SRK. Never had raw star power and appeal among masses like Madhuri or Sridevi or Hema.
