It has been a completely dominant performance from Mumbai Indians and they are off to a flying start in the WPL. They would have dreamt of such a start and they would be absolutely overjoyed! On the other hand, it has been a nightmare for the Gujarat Giants. After losing the toss and put into bat, Mumbai Indians ticked most of the boxes right, with good knocks from Sciver-Brunt, Matthews, Harmanpreet, and Kerr. A score above 200 meant that there was immense pressure on Gujarat and they crumbled under that. With Mooney getting injured in the first over, they were already staring down the barrel. After that, they lost 4 wickets inside the powerplay which completely pushed them back. They couldn't recover from there. Only two batters got into the double digits and that tells you the story. Saika Ishaque was the star for Mumbai with the ball, as she took a 4-fer. Stick around for the presentations..
Harsha Bhogle: Talk of flexing your muscles....that is what the Mumbai Indians have done today
Sneh Rana | Stand-in captain, Gujarat Giants - It's just the start, some of the players soak it up early, some will take time (on players getting ready at this level). A learning curve for us and we'll come back strongly. The physio will be better placed to explain (on Mooney's injury). I want to stand-up for whatever the team needs, if I do get captaincy, we'll try and execute our plans better. This was just the first match, we need to keep our heads high, we have players who have done well at the domestic level and we'll certainly look to comeback stronger tomorrow.
Nita Ambani, Owner, Mumbai Indians - Iconic day, iconic moment for women in sport, just happy to be part of the WPL. I love every moment, want girls in the country to take up sports, live their dreams and make a career of it. MI is known for its fearless and exciting cricket, the girls have performed so well and I'm really proud. Special mention to Harman, she played a special innings, Amelia Kerr was fabulous, batted and bowled well, enjoyed every moment today. Wonderful to see so much support, great to see men and women come to the ground to support women's cricket. All the best for all the teams in this tournament.
Harmanpreet Kaur | Mumbai Indians captain: I think it was a brilliant start, it felt like a dream come true. First day and whatever we did it worked well for us. We kept things simpe and clear. Told players to play natural. It is a big day for women's cricket and we talked about expressing ourselves. I watched the ball nicely and backed myself. Whatever came my way, I backed myself and it went my way. (On the team chat at the halfway mark) When we were batting, we knew it is a very good batting wicket. When the other team was bowling in the right spot, it was not easy to play. So told our bowlers it will not be easy if you bowl in the right spot. And I am happy that every bowler bowled well. It's a big day and a big victory for us and the way we started, we are really happy.
