I dont think the makers are trying to make Meerub look bad or portraying Murtasim as perfection personified here. Infact, they are very well written grey characters and credit to both the actors for dishing out such nuanced performances, Wahaj in particular. Its beacuse of these grey shades, people are questioning certain elements and narratives and that where the maker's hit the bull's eye!
The setting of a story is very important,as it not only helps to clarify the theme it also helps us understand a character's worldview through how they think about their surroundings. I as a viewer cant expect Meerab to behave like me and then criticize her for being the way she is (reckless , dumb at times BUT she is not WRONG) or neither can I expect Murtasim to behave like a normal bloke(like this cute n sweet Salman in Kuch ankahi). Is he a TOXIC guy? No but he is no saint either.
Murtasim- Though the infamous SLAP seems out of character but coming to think of it its not all that 'out of character'. When Meerab starts spewing venom and calls him a coward,it provoked a visceral reaction from him. And these viscreal feelings are very instinctive and are not the result of thought! Hence we got to see the instant shame n guilt on his face. The makers here did not try to justify it/normalise it and also did not attempt to change his agression or his control freak nature after this incident, which I apppreciate! This guy is selectively progressive,is nothing like the Maliks but still is part of the status quo-izzat,revenge,panachayat and God knows what not! An emergence of a wife one fine day is not going to change his years of mindset. He is good at heart, far more matured with tough responsibilities! It's not him,it's us who thinks he is the bad guy here and the same goes for Meerab too. We need to cut her some slack.
Meerab- She is the exact opposite of Murtasim! The only reality for her is the ideal world that she was living in at her parent's place all these years. She is idealistic, impractical and a little naive too where like most of us,she believes she can change age old customs in a day. Her actions up until now are all totally justified! Her dreams have been brutally crushed, she's been physically and emotionally abused and she's also been uprooted..let's not forget that! so how do we expect her to behave sanely? She agreed to this marriage to take revenge against this family for the very reason and started redirecting all her anger towards Murtasim. He's been her punching bag from the very beginning!
This is not not Meerab vs Murtasim but a fight against 2 different idealogies. They both have their flaws and their reasons for it are also justified. At the end of it all, there can be only one winner and that's a no-brainer :) BUT am more interested in their journey not the end-result! Marriage, many believe,is a 50-50 realtionship..it sounds good but it doesnt work! Most of the time its either 40/60 or 30/70 but that's ok as long as he realizes that he cant treat Meerab like a Haya or a Mariyam and she also needs to realize that she cant fight her battles alone and its ok to lean on him!
They both are diamterically opposed but will need each other to co-exist,he is the Yin to her Yang! When was the last time we saw such diverse protagonists(with equally brilliant performances) in PTV? I guess that is what is making me forget and forgive all the other caricaturish arcs/performances of the other supporting actors(but I am beginning to like Anwar's character growth though :) )
Like someone rightly said-
They will fall,break,fail BUT THEN
they will eventually rise, heal and overcome !!
