A treat to watch...Siddharth Anand at Front Row (long video...in English with English subtitles - for stop and go, if you want to)
nyt part of review
Other setups have the same top-this sense of fun. Anand’s crew boasts the stunt coordinator of “Top Gun: Maverick,” Casey O’Neill, and the “Mad Max: Fury Road” stunt performer Craig Macrae. But the director doesn’t have the greatest feel for tempo, or a consistent flair for staging. A monotonous fight on a train is only redeemed by a Looney Tunes escape from derailment.
Lending welcome panache is Deepika Padukone as another deadly operative, Rubina, who may prove helpful to Pathaan. The sweet rapport between Padukone and Khan loosens up the film’s endless fracas, and it’s the spark for, yes, a song. When Pathaan spots Rubina poolside in Spain, she launches a joyful crowded bump-and-grind number. (“The moment I feel a wave of modesty, I throw it to the wind!”)
As a villain, Jim’s a bit of a cold bath, and not just because he starts video-calling in threats of biological warfare. “Pathaan” is in some ways a save-the-world superhero movie without suits, and while less self-serious, the hefty length can lag. More is not always better — though the gusto of Padukone speedskating to the rescue at one point goes a long way.

Haven't seen Pathan yet. But Siddharth Anand always gave me the impression of a Hollywood wannabe. He's inspired by Hollywood but lacks the imagination and creativity to create something new.Yashraj gets him excellent crew and topnotch Bollywood stars. But he does not utilize them 100%. I'm more impressed by what Lokesh Kanakaraj has done in Tamil cinema. Clearly he's influenced by Hollywood too. But he comes up with something new in his action setpieces in his so-called LCU universe.
Definitely, I'll take a look at what Lokesh Kanagaraj is doing (thanks for the information)
Yes, I agree with your take on Siddharth (without the "wannabe")...he admits himself to be inspired by Hollywood action movies (especially those starring Tom Cruise).
That is okay, I think. Anyways he brings entertaining action movies onto the big screen 😊
Take a look at altgr's thread...it's interesting to listen to what Siddharth has to say...

Will do. I have been watching SIddharth Anand's films from his Salaam Namaste days. But his films are so cookie-cutter. All about Indians settled abroad and their candy-floss lives ,never going beyond the superficial. There's nothing wrong with being inspired by Hollywood especially since he went to film school there. But he does not create anything new -in terms of realistic well rounded characters or action set-pieces even after 5-6 films. It's all about style, songs and glorious locations.
Lokesh's films have a lot in common with Siddharth's with their common Hollywood inspirations - the obsession with guns for example. he bigger the better. Same with the kick-ass women who do get their space to show their action skills but cede maximum time to the alpha-men who fight overwhelming odds. The skillfully inserted cameos from famous stars interlinking the films and expanding the universe.
However Lokesh is better with creating his action setpieces and including more raw "local" criminal characters. Some of his characters are glossy and urban of course. But the characters are all real. Even the scary villains. He makes maximum use of his stars. His films usually takes place at night and that's a novelty in itself.

Agree. It is evident from his interviews too. But he is one of the few directors in Bollywood who knows how to trick the fans of superstars and entertain the mass. In the case of War, it was just one time watch with lame twists . Hrithik's presence elevated the movie.Pathaan worked predominantly because it was SRK's comeback movie after a long break . Ofcourse some dialogues, other stars, trailer cut, and songs contributed to the success but the whole main credit goes to SRK.
Except for the stars and charismatic SRK , Pathaan is just an average film with OTT scenes and predictable plot if you compare with Vikram . It is the stars who made the impact. When we watch the movie again ,analyse the plot , Pathaan I would say except for Jim and Dimples's character, everyone including Pathaan's characterisation lacks conviction .Pathaan is all heart ,I got it, but as an audience I didn't get full satisfaction. If people including me liked Pathaan,it is because SRK and we overlook the lack of quality in characterisation.Rubina's characterisation is worst, there is no depth. After watching Sidharth Anand's interviews I believe even in future his making won't change as he firmly believes in the larger than life plot , unrealistic scenes and character, not bothered of overall plot, not at all bothered of characterisation. If any of Zoya or Rubina's fans expect a crossover or spinoff ,it would be a disappointed because this guy is not capable of thinking beyond male superstars .
@heisenberg17 , in your review you said the terorrism was carried out by outfit x and not boko haram or isis. i saw the movie and its not like that. shah rukh says that organisation carried out terrorism for boko haram and isis.
he doesnt exonerate boko or isis from terrorism.
you either missed the dialogue or you misguided us.
