Donovan Ferreira gives Super Kings a winning start

January 12 2023

Donovan Ferreira hit 8 fours and 5 sixes in his 40-ball 82Donovan Ferreira hit 8 fours and 5 sixes in his 40-ball 82

Donovan Ferreira gave an early glimpse of why he is a highly scouted batter on the T20 circuit with a 40-ball 82* that laid the foundations for Joburg Super Kings' victory in their SA20 opener against Durban Super Giants. On a surface aiding spin at Kingsmead, Ferreira stitched crucial partnerships with Faf du Plessis (39 off 33) and Romario Shepherd (40 off 20) to lift a wobbly Super Kings from 27/4 to an ultimately winning total of 190/6. Their death bowling too came to the fore in their final winning margin of 16 runs.

The visitors, who elected to bat, were pushed onto the backfoot early in the contest with Quinton de Kock's expert use of the slow bowlers inside the PowerPlay. By the end of the six overs, the Super Kings were four down with Prenelan Subrayan dismissing Kyle Verreynne and Lewis Gregory, while Keshav Maharaj and Dwaine Pretorius added the wickets of Reeza Hendricks and Janneman Malan respectively.

Du Plessis, batting at No.3, hunkered down to anchor the innings and in the company of Ferreira played out three quiet overs before the latter exploded into life right after the time out. Subrayan, who had taken those two wickets in the final over of the PowerPlay, was squirted past short-third for a four and then hit right back over his head for a six. That 16-run 10th over effectively swung the momentum of the game with Ferreira helping himself to two more boundaries in the following over bowled by Maharaj.

Ferreira kept swinging for the fence and succeeding and despite losing du Plessis midway though that second half assault, JSK's score surged ahead. Durban were particularly profligate with their death bowling, leaking as many as 91 runs in the final six overs. Ferreira finished with five sixes and eight fours and Shepherd added four maximums of his own to put a spanner in Durban's early bowling works.

The Super Giants, however, proved they weren't out of the battle despite their weak bowling show in the second half of that innings. De Kock and Kyle Mayers raced off their lines at the restart, adding 98 runs for the first wicket in 11 overs before Mayers was stumped off Phangiso. Ferreira then also provided the star turn with the ball by dismissing de Kock for a 52-ball 78, after which Durban slipped into quicksand. Heinrich Klaasen, batting at No.3, couldn't get going and Wiaan Mulder's promotion to No.4 didn't pay off.

Alzarri Joseph added two wickets and the Super Giants' innings went into a tailspin. They could muster only 48 runs from the final six overs, an ultimate point of difference between the two sides on the day.

Brief scores: Joburg Super Kings 190/6 (Donovan Ferreira 82*, Romario Shepherd 40; Prenelan Subrayan 2-26) beat Durban Super Giants 174/5 (Quinton de Kock 78, Kyle Mayers 39; Alzarri Joseph 2-30) by 16 runs.
