You can see how southern accent is mocked even here

So it's not just people of color who go thru this

Not just the southern accent. The hillbilly/Appalachian accent is made fun of a lot. And as a Midwestern, I'm well aware that the Midwestern accent, especially Yooper, is treated as a punchline. People from the Midwest are generally perceived as simple, unwitting, slow, and not worldly. Little do they know Midwest nice is sugarcoated burn - ain't that special.

The entire USA is filled with regional biases and rivalries. So yes, many white people do get made fun of a lot. Even wealthy white folks from the Hamptons get made fun of for their mannerisms and accents.

But at least for most groups, they have a sense of belonging and majority status somewhere in the country. It hits very differently when you don't just sound different but look different too.

I am cringing so hard... at some comments in this thread. Attacking people for mimicking accents well - an important part of learning languages, btw.

I agree. Speaking a language clearly to make sure the listener understands is respectful. Don’t eat your words unnecessarily just because you speak like that in your native language. When I speak Spanish, a language I learned as an adult, I try to make sure my accent is as close to Mexican Spanish as humanly possible. It’s just basic courtesy.

Instead of developing their economy and improving education etc .

That's shocking 🤯 Is that true?

I didn't see it when I was there

Can any body here living in Southern states vouch for that

We speak Konkani at home. I intentionally change my Konkani accent based on if I am in or speaking to my family from Bombay or Goa. Most of my family struggles with Goan Konkani. I was the Goan family favorite because I had near native fluence from a very young age. Now that I visit Goa once every five or more years instead of every year, that ability is gone.

100% adopting accents to communicate more clearly is courteous. And there is also nothing wrong with cultivating accents to get more acceptance.

Accents are bad only if used to tokenize or make fun of people. Also, if it's something weird like that Inventing Anna lady did.

Segregation is happening in colleges too

"Overt racial discrimination goes well beyond admissions policies and is expanding rapidly throughout college programs.

More than 75 colleges nationwide offer separate graduation ceremonies based on race, ethnicity, or sexual identity. Separate dormitories, “safe spaces,” orientations, trainings, recreational activities, and even scholarships continue to mushroom throughout higher education"

And this is recent phenomena, happening in the 21st century

The NYT article won't open but .I don't think SC gov stopped Black's from voting, they were accused of gerrymandering (which is different from blocking from voting)

Gerrymandering is doing voting restricting with more added hoops to it. From the ACLU website:

"Redistricting refers to the process of redrawing the lines of districts from which public officials are elected. Gerrymandering is when the lines are drawn to manipulate the boundaries to predetermine the outcome of elections, hindering voters from voicing their interests through their votes."
