This is a real pity because limited series is where creative writing is at peak. You are right, they are losing the plot and too much of imbalance - whether it is toxicity or stupidity. Even I started watching Parizad and stopped somewhere, literally waiting to see how it ended.
End of the day in a two character romance, you cannot just rely on crazy fan following of one actor or actress to make a show worthwhile. So many shows have held lot of promise, even up to recently Ishq e la really had some fantastic storytelling which again dragged and suffered from plot loss.
Basically storytelling on TV, cinema and books goes through phases which probably reflect society. Maybe we are in a society that upholds imbalance, toxic extremes, irrational behavior in name of love and fulfillment, superficial relationships that seek depth in artifice, loss of conscience and overwhelming need for external validation instead of internal reflection and introspection.
Don’t get me wrong, I am all for some mindless Tv watching with some good looking leads - case in point, Mann Mayal where you are constantly face palming on the leads behavior, rolling your eyes at the irrational happenings, but there is some authenticity to the storytelling, some accountability to the world the director has created. In that suspension of reality, you are able to enjoy it, as long as it meets your sensibilities somewhere.
While watching Mann Mayal I wanted to insert my hands into the screen and strangle Maya Ali's character to death. She irritated the living hell out of me during the last episodes. But overall it was a good drama despite the dragging.
You know my definition of toxic is different than most of viewers , for example I never thought that Khaani is a toxic drama, while watching it I never rooted for Khaani to love Mir Hadi..in fact I thought he was delusional. But I was moved deeply by his change, his story was all about repentance and redemption and how no matter how far you think you have sinned , God is still all forgiving. I loved how Mir Hadi didn't just repent but also went on to get the punishment of his deeds. Words cannot describe how much I was spiritually moved by this drama.
On the other hand I found dramas like Mere Humsafar extremely toxic and I couldn't even watch it. A drama like Sabbat has one of the most toxic characters that made me leave watching it midway. I am talking about the one played by Sarah Khan.
I watched Parizaad to the end and I liked the first half of it more than the second. But I was amazed that none of the viewers thought that it was problematic of Parizaad to protect a wife killer to the degree he was willing to confess to the murder himself instead of letting his boss go to jail. He went on to inherit the fortune that was made by this boss by illegal means and no one patted an eye.
In the end I want to say that the decline of Pakistani dramas is caused by lazy writing. They will have a good idea but they don't know how to make it into a good drama.
Habs started good , the direction was excellent despite the editing errors but they just didn't know how to wrap it up so they fell into the trap of cliches.
