No playback singing, although far more prolific in South Asia, is a universal concept. It has been used for a long time for various reasons, sometimes to an artist's detriment and sometimes to their benefit.

When movies went from silent to talkies, there were playback voiceover actors for several years. This was because many silent era stars either didn't speak the language well, had thick regional accents, or couldn't enunciate. The talkies created a need for actors to master enunciation and varied accents.

While most western musicals tend to use actors' voices, many, like Sound of Music, West Side Story, and others, have used playback singers for certain actors. Surely, the west needs to adapt playback singing to spare us the trauma of listening to Pierce Brosnan and Russel Crowe singing.

Sometimes it is detrimental because the artist is considered not good-looking for the screen, or it was used to make a song more palatable by using white performers instead of black musicians behind it.

But many times its a beneficial choice for an artist who is camera shy (like Sia), or gets very well compensated (for many established playback singers), or when artists believe that someone else is necessary for the music video.

Live performances often use playback sections - especially if the performer is going to be jumping around or moving a lot. And some artists have been shamed for using playback where people expected them to be live.

As long as everyone is in agreement and no artist feels bad or unfairly hidden - playback is fine.
