1970s - Hema Malini

1980s - Sridevi (First Female Superstar)

1990s - Madhuri Dixit (The Last Female Superstar)

2000s - Rani Mukherjee

2010s - Kangana Ranaut

Agree?

-Disagree on a couple of things: Noor Jahan did okay in the first half of 1940s, but Suraiya had eclipsed her and was the far bigger star of the two. Partition didn't help as Noor Jahan went to Pakistan.

-50s is split between Nargis, Madhubala and Meena Kumari. But Meena's alcoholism caught up to her early.

-For the 60s, it's interesting because Vyjayanthimala at the time was not the most successful actress - a lot of her famous films like Amarpali flopped. She retained her huge fame later on as her films aged well.

Vyjayanthimala had frequent hiatuses, and since the 60s were the booming age of cinema there were multiple famous actresses: Sadhana, Nutan and Asha Parekh could make a case too for the 60s.

However I do believe Vyjanti was the most popular actress, even if she wasn't the most successful of the 60s.

-For 2000s, the most popular actress has to be Aishwarya. It's not even close.

Rani never had that kind of fan following. She had critical acclaim though. It's similar to the 60s case where Nutan's films had more success but the more popular one was someone else.

-Similarly for 2010s, Deepika is the most popular actress overall.

Katrina had success through her movies, and some hit moments - but not the universal appeal of Deepika, Katrina's fandom was more the 20-somethings. Also all of Katrina's hits were with someone else. Deepika, besides her SRK movies, has done a remarkable amount of hits by herself.

A couple of interesting things:

-While Sridevi and Madhuri were superstars, Hema Malini had the best box office run. She ruled the box office for 17 years. Her #2 and #3 competitors were Rekha and Zeenat Aman.

- Mumtaz actually had the best box office run out of the 60s stars. However all her hits were with Rajesh Khanna, kind of like Katrina today had her hits with another star.

-Devika Rani was the most popular actress of the 1930s, but she retired very early. Yet even post-retirement she was the most popular actress for a while! Also the original businesswoman.

-Nargis was one of the most popular stars of her time, but many of her films have been lost to history. Many have not been preserved. However, the South versions with Savitri have!

- Sridevi was the only one who held superstardom in more than 1 industry.

- Most of the popular actresses were dancers. Vyjayanthimala, Hema, Madhuri are trained dancers, Sridevi, Meena Kumari, Madhubala were mostly self taught.

2000s would be mix between Ash and Rani.

2010s is Katrina Kaif hands down. Regardless of how many came or what PR others had, no one beats mass popularity of Katrina since 2005.

Rekha was never as popular as Hema. Rekha seems more or equally popular only now as she looks young and has knack of PR thanks to affair with AB.

Hema was head and shoulders above anyone in 70s and early 80s.

Only one to give hits in any genre, with any star and even post marriage and during pregnancy and post kids and became popular on TV too. No actress in history has enjoyed fame as Hema who also later became editor of magazines and wins elections also purely due to her fame despite zero work and gets lot of ads too.

80s: Hema

90s: Madhuri

2000s : Aishwarya? Preity? Idk I’m confused about this one 😆

2010s ( more like post mid 000s) - Katrina &

(Most mid 2010)- Deepika

Karishma and Aishwarya could have done so much better had they not stopped working proactively post marriage the way they did .

The last female superstars were Deepika and Katrina. There might be more in the future.

Also 2000s as a decade belonged to Aishwarya. Between 2003-05 there was a lull period thanks to Salman and the boycott episode (and that is when Rani thrived) but she still emerged the most popular actress.

2010s belonged to Katrina and Deepika both. Both enjoyed great popularity. Kat was more popular with men, while Deepika was more popular with women.

You forgot to thank Salman for making Aishwarya's career. It was Salman who asked Bhansali to cast his girlfriend Aishwarya (who was a flop struggling actress until 1999) opposite him in HDDCS. Aishwarya's first hit was HDDCS and she owes it to Salman. Aishwarya owes Devdas to Salman too because she became friends with Bhansali through Salman. All the movies she got from 1999-2002 are directed/produced by Salman and his friends.

Even during her so-called lull period and her boycott (lol) drama, she still worked in about 8 movies (two with Salman's brother and best friend Sanjay Dutt) but all those movies were flops because she needs a male superstar or a multi-starrer cast to deliver a hit.

Rani started thriving from 1998 as soon as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai released. Rani thrived because she got along with everyone unlike Aishwarya who had a fight with everyone including Aamir Khan. Rani has delivered more solo hits than Aishwarya's total hits.

Aishwarya owes her Bollywood career to her relationship with Salman. Had Salman not introduced her to his connections, she would still be working in South doing cameos in Iruvar and forgetful movies like Jeans.
