Agree?
-Disagree on a couple of things: Noor Jahan did okay in the first half of 1940s, but Suraiya had eclipsed her and was the far bigger star of the two. Partition didn't help as Noor Jahan went to Pakistan.
-50s is split between Nargis, Madhubala and Meena Kumari. But Meena's alcoholism caught up to her early.
-For the 60s, it's interesting because Vyjayanthimala at the time was not the most successful actress - a lot of her famous films like Amarpali flopped. She retained her huge fame later on as her films aged well.
Vyjayanthimala had frequent hiatuses, and since the 60s were the booming age of cinema there were multiple famous actresses: Sadhana, Nutan and Asha Parekh could make a case too for the 60s.
However I do believe Vyjanti was the most popular actress, even if she wasn't the most successful of the 60s.
-For 2000s, the most popular actress has to be Aishwarya. It's not even close.
Rani never had that kind of fan following. She had critical acclaim though. It's similar to the 60s case where Nutan's films had more success but the more popular one was someone else.
-Similarly for 2010s, Deepika is the most popular actress overall.
Katrina had success through her movies, and some hit moments - but not the universal appeal of Deepika, Katrina's fandom was more the 20-somethings. Also all of Katrina's hits were with someone else. Deepika, besides her SRK movies, has done a remarkable amount of hits by herself.
A couple of interesting things:
-While Sridevi and Madhuri were superstars, Hema Malini had the best box office run. She ruled the box office for 17 years. Her #2 and #3 competitors were Rekha and Zeenat Aman.
- Mumtaz actually had the best box office run out of the 60s stars. However all her hits were with Rajesh Khanna, kind of like Katrina today had her hits with another star.
-Devika Rani was the most popular actress of the 1930s, but she retired very early. Yet even post-retirement she was the most popular actress for a while! Also the original businesswoman.
-Nargis was one of the most popular stars of her time, but many of her films have been lost to history. Many have not been preserved. However, the South versions with Savitri have!
- Sridevi was the only one who held superstardom in more than 1 industry.
- Most of the popular actresses were dancers. Vyjayanthimala, Hema, Madhuri are trained dancers, Sridevi, Meena Kumari, Madhubala were mostly self taught.
