Well said. This is what makes me curious. Today's generation kids will not know Karishma was a top star ib 90s and Shilpa, Raveena or Sonali were nowhere near her in BO or success.

Karishma is low profile now. Hardly does ads or reality shows. Whereas Raveena is anchoring shows, writes political tweets, does films and ads, Shilpa is all over TV, has own YT channel and is a fitness icon.

Karishma also looks worse nowadays compared to 90s heroines like Madhuri, Sonali, Raveena, Shilpa etc.

South remakes were common and they took overaacting to another level

And Yes Karishma's contemporaries were much better, some were great actually, she had stiff competition compared to Kareena' who got lucky with her contemporaries... They were so-so at best

Kareena had Aishwarya, Sushmita, Rani, Preity, Katrina, Deepika, Vidya, Konkona etc as contemporaries and juniors. They were not of level of Sridevi, Madhuri, Juhi, Kajol, Raveena, Shilpa, Sonali, Tabu, Nandita, Manisha etc that Karishma dealt with.

Competition part is quite true. Any girl would find it hard to carve niche at times when Sridevi and Madhuri were still going strong and giving performances like Lamhe, Laadla, HAHK, Beta, DTPH, Anjaam etc. Sridevi also kept working till 1996-97. And Madhuri was going strong till 2001-2002. Karishma also began declining offers post 2000 to make way for Bebo.

It is harsh to say Karishma was NEVER a good actress. She was excellent in Zubeida and Fiza. And showed immense improvement from her crap films she did early in career. She was also solid in DTPH as a performer and it is not easy to hold your own against an actress like Madhuri.

Kareena got better opportunities due to 2000s being a more experimental era. Karishma never ever got films like Omkara or Dev because such films were not made in 90s at all.

I would give Karishma credit for matching dance steps with Govinda and his comic timing too.

I do agree she was really weak in early days with her voice and thick eyebrows and worst dressing sense.

Kareena in contrast, never had issues with her sense of make up, dressing sense and style and learnt well from mistakes of her sister.

I have never seen Fiza. She was definitely better in Zubeida than her earlier work but, her earlier work really sucked.

Karishma was always a great dancer. No arguments there.

I always found Kareena more natural, more subtle in her acting.

As for make up, Karishma’s super thick eyebrows were her own refusal to get them tweezed for whatever reason, I assume. But her style was more whichever stylist was working on each movie set, no? The first time that I think she finally looked like she had arrived in the 90s was Sundra Sundra song in Rakshak. The big curls and gaudy hair pieces gave way to sleek do’s and cute petite clothes. So was she dictating her own style or did she just have a bad stylists from one movie set to another?

Dont know about others but people around me love Karishma a lot compared to Kareena and Karishma is one of most fav actress of 90s kids and those who used to watch movies then. Shilpa etc maybe relevant now online, but people around me don’t follow stars online. They just watch their movies and they remember Karishma.

Yeah Karishma is remembered fondly by 90s and early 2000s kids thanks to all iconic songs and hits like DTPH, HSSH, Raja Hindustani she did with Khans and Govinda.

But I was talking about kids born post 2005 who may not know Karishma more and may assume Shilpa was more popular given how Shilpa is more active on T.V. and online and is better maintained, aged better, is fitter compared to any actress of 90s.

That depends on style of acting and filmmaking. Aamir for eg is loud and OTT in Raja Hindustani but subtle in DCH, TZP, RDB. 90s generally had OTT acting and films.

Subtlety came post 2000. Filmmakers had different style.

Kareena has had her OTT moments in films like MPKDH.

I agree on Karishma's looks. Especially Sundara song made her look different. I wonder why she never focused much on her looks and dress.

She looked best in Zubeida, Raja Hindustani, HSSH, DTPH. Otherwise her looks fluctuate and vary a lot in films she did throughout career.

Yes. Imagine doing B grade films with unknown actors while Kareena got to debut in a JP Dutta film with Amitabh's son and later did K3G with Hrithik and got Asoka with SRK.

Karishma hardly got movies opposite big actors in first year of her career. Zero guidance on make up, look, styling either. Karishma hardly got favours as usual nepo kids get.

Kajol got it on a platter thanks to YRF, Dharma and SRK.

Got too many awards. Amused how people mock looks of Karishma but no one talks about how Kajol used to look in early 90s with her bushy unibrow, frizzy hair and uneven complexion (I firmly believe she got her skin lightened later).

Purely pairing with SRK saved her.

Kajol was never a good dancer nor had any sex appeal or charisma. Just a girl next door appeal. Even in acting she hardly pushed herself the way Rani did Black or Tabu did Maachis. Dushman is the most serious role Kajol did in 90s.

I cannot imagine Kajol trying a Fiza or Zubeida.

Imagine Karishma, Sonali, Shilpa, Raveena, Manisha, Tabu getting opportunities like DDLJ, KKHH etc.

SRK was easily the biggest male star of 90s along with Salman and Aamir but he never worked with Karishma except in DTPH. Whereas Kajol always got work with all Khans, Akshay, Ajay etc. Kajol still piggybacks on Khans to get success be it MNIK, Fanaa, Dilwale or her hubby Ajay with whom she did Tanhaji.

No Khans, Chopras or Johars favoured Karishma or other actresses as much as they favoured Kajol. Even Madhuri got no work from Chopras until DTPH. Imagine ignoring the top actress of that time to give all opportunities to Kajol!
