Purposefully darkening someone's face is not make up, it's literally the definition of brown face. What they can do is apply zero makeup and have them film as they look, that is enough because that is what everyone is like. But Bollywood would rather have you darken your skin tone and have audience lap up the false narrative. Slum dog millionaire was literally based on life in slums and yet they had the foresight to not resort to nonsense like this. They had Dev Patel and Frieda shoot without makeup as they were and nobody questioned its validity because that is what humans look like.

You might want to watch what Irrfan (or could've been Nawaz) said about Danny Boyle's comments.

He auditioned Bollywood actors for his cast, and everyone looked too good (paraphrasing). Too pretty, too buff.

He hired relative newbies partly for that reason. They looked like ordinary people.

I suppose the makers could've pulled a Danny Boyle and hired a regular-looking person to be Vedha instead of Hrithik.

THIS is mockery of brown-skinned south Indians. I was so pissed when Ra One came out. SRK's home production, no less.

Indians come in all colours ye to Hollywood ko bhi samajh nahi ata wo log bhi Indians ko typecast kiye hue hain, Hollywood se to hamko sikhne ka need nahi hai

Vedha ka class aur caste dono nahi bataya hai movie ke kisi bhi promotional video mein

Hrithik is brown to brown face wala issue on a brown actor kaise ayega?

Uska character gangster wala hai

You're yet again completely missing the point. Where does it say that a thug or petty thief can't be a person with fair complexion? You could have an actor portray being rugged without changing their skin tone. Wardrobe, mannerisms, personality can be a marker of a downtrodden character. A good actor or director know how to portray such. That's exactly what Danny Boyle did. He casted newbies but didn't have the said actors have dark grease over their faces just so the audience understands they are downtrodden. Colourism to class consciousness is linked heavily in Indian society since colonialism. This is not just makeup dude or having an ordinary looking gut playing a thug. This "makeup" further perpetuates the narrative that pretty or fair skinned folks are not taken to crime or all the pickpocketers and blue collar job holders are unkempt and dark in colour. It starts with having a barber with brown skin and a banker with fair skin in NCERT/State board textbooks to popular media such as movies driving the same point.

Again all they had to do was give Alia, HR have no makeup at all. Believe me, none of the Bollywood look pristine as a newly born baby without makeup. They look like regular humans just as everyone.

It is not that simple. If brownface is not the issue here then why not brownface Saif (who plays a higher grade policeman role) as well. Why just Hrithik? They are clearly using skin colour as a way of reiterating class. They same thing happened in Gully Boy. They brownfaced Ranveer but left Alia's skintone as she is because her family is well off in the movie. It's just so subtle that you don't notice it at all but it becomes part of your subconsciousness and how you relate to people. This shouldn't even be the case at all because Hrithik is South Asian so why even varnish his skin tone, eh? I'm not faulting Hrithik here, rather the movie makers.

Hrithik, Samantha etc are INDIAN. For them, the makeup is about the circumstances of the character. Someone who's not living in airconditioned comfort and prob look browner.

I mean, where does it stop otherwise? You want a deaf actor to play a deaf character? An amputee to play a character with amputated leg? An autistic actor to play someone on the spectrum?

So what's the point of calling it ACTING?

I watch an American TV show where they have cast an amputee for the role of a women with amputed leg. An autistic boy in the role of autistic boy.

Your points have merit. But why do you resort to ad hominems to present your arguments? 😕 You have gone personal with HMR twice, while she has stuck to the topic being discussed.

It’s sad because you guys are making such good points. Would love to read more.

For that one show, there are hundreds of others where able-bodied actors portray disabled characters. That is the job description of an actor.
