You guys...I saw it finally and just to clarify it wasn't 2hr 10min..they just wrote that for some absurd reason ..the movie was its actual length which I think was 2hr 40min..and guess what..I LIKED IT!! And you know this was one of those movies I had least expectations from..
First of all..The VFX was just on another level for a BW movie..i mean you have got to appreciate where due..this is HUGE from a BW movie and its on spectacular level..
The movie is not perfect..it has its fair share of flaws..for me the 1st half was slower than the 2nd half (which i enjoyed more)
Kudos to Ayan..he believed in this and created a world we have never seen before in a BW movie
Along with the VFX..the background music and the music in general is amazing.
The screenplay dips though and the movie is particularly let down by the lovestory angle which is the weakest link of the movie because of literally little to no chemisty between the lead actors.
Ranbir is sincere though this is no performance like he has given in the past like Tamasha, Barfi, Rockstar but he does what he could do the best in a movie where performance may take a backseat since there is so much more which is being created. He is still more comfortable in slice of life genre where the actor totally shines like no one else.
Amitab bachchan is in top form. You do realize what a powerful actor he is because be it piku or bramastra. polar opposite movies but he makes a larger than life Bramastra seem as real as a movie like piku..he is what I would say a truly versatile actor
Nagarjuna was barely there. SRK was amazing in cameo. Mouni Roy is impactful in a good enough role. She is actually the villian of the movie and its amazing to see her getting this role in such a big scale movie. She doesn't disappoint.
Alia Bhatt however is the weakest link in this movie. This is her worst performance ever and it even beats the atrocious SOTY exactly a decade ago. I couldn't believe this is the same girl who shone so bright in numerous movies like highway, Udta Punjab, Dear Zindagi, Raazi and the ones released this year itself like Gangubai & Darlings. Horribly one note, Alia is a total misfit here. Her disconnect with the surroundings could not be more obvious, in every frame it seemed as if she just couldn't connect with anything and her acting appeared artificial in every frame. She also has a very weak role despite a good screen time. She is mostly standing clueless or shouting shiva shiva.
This is a risky project but kudos to Ayan for sticking to it and making it happen. I want to discuss so much more but ill save it for now because I don't want to give any spoilers.
3.5 stars
I would say, go give it a try. Its something never seen before from BW!!
