So y'all are aware that Kajol was the original choice for Manisha's role right... but it's always claimed that there was a date-issue... - I just found a news-item from 1997 and it states that the issue was in fact her salary. The producers were not offering her the current price she charged, but she wouldn't budge, so they parted ways... š kinda sad no š¤ - it's funny because I always wondered "how come SRK could do Dil Se but for Kajol, her dates were clashing with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.... yet SRK is there in KKHH too" problem solved 
24 years later, and I'm still waiting for someone to OYE @ me like this š„ŗ (well, again... it's been a while)

That IS sad, especially since Iām not a fan of Manisha and her sinus filled expressions. She has a permanent case of looking like she has the flu. I wouldāve preferred Kajol. š
Iāve never been OYEād, especially not from someone Iād consider the CUTEST MAN ON EARTH.

I just did some quick reading, and turns out there was a kind of boycott/censorship type issue with the film which resulted in several cuts, and delays, and negative press... for the film (Iruvar) š² - and it did go on to win several awards including 2 National Awards, and got amazing reviews... š¤.. intriguing.. I wanna check it out!!
Well... I just read a news article from 1998 by a South journalist, and they stated the film was a disaster, completely rejected by audience at box office...also mani's style very edgy, arty, realistic with songs didnt work in hindi

[Dil Se was released in South dubbed in Tamil + Telugu with the title Uyure..] I do wonder what went wrong for him here then.. did they reject a dubbed product(?)

Oh how I wish Kajol had done the role but I think she was already shooting for many movies simultaneously and then KKHH started. And the dates would clash also she has always stated she regrets not being able to work with Mani Ratnam till date.
The film looked beautiful but sad to say it looked very incoherent for me. The songs, even though amazing would pop from anywhere and would completely disrupt the flow and most of all I didn't like SRK's acting. He did go OTT at many places, compare this to Madhavan in Mani Ratnam's movie and you can see such a stark difference.
I used to love this movie when I was a teen. But after re-watching the movie recently, I have to say SRK's character Amar was so creepy. following Manisha's character everywhere, not taking no for an answer, forcing her to accept him. 
Didn't age well really. Problematic.
