After back to back bombs, Iruvar and Dil Se, Mani bounced back with his next Alaipayuthey (Sakhi/Sathiya in Hindi). It is a memorable love story with an All Time Classic Soundtrack. It was followed by another cult movie. Mani has lost it, but its post Raavanan/Ravan. To be more precise, from Kadal (2013).

@Dil Se - Love the album, a true-blue classic and will remain so in years to come. Haven't seen the movie after its initial release and first screening on TV, though.

IMO alaipayuthey and kannathil are good compared to his ravan and post period but not effortless like before, almost like he is trying to balance commerce and art, if not mojo he lost his peak

His movies prior were very organic

But most people will still name all his movies prior to dil se as his peak

Mouna ragam to Bombay/Roja was his peak

As I watched Dil Se only in 2004, I would like to know what made Dil Se "bomb" at the BOI. What didn't the audience like?

too ahead of its time

dark

srk though had done negative roles at the beginning , mostly he had lover boy image after that, pardes, ddlj, dil tho paga hai were his big hits then

ppl couldnt take the image change,

i think also the heroine, not the usual cute, but grey, edgy, rape victim, terrorist was too much for the hindi audience who were used to chopra type heroine

also mani's style very edgy, arty, realistic with songs didnt work in hindi

though similar worked in south then

now it would have succeeded, infact now the edgy and arty part and realistic can be maximised as audienec will take it

That! I experienced/read this (negative reaction because n o t catering to his lover-boy-image) when he had done PBDHH, Asoka, KANK, Swades, Ra.One...

...and trying to do other characters that also tried to "destroy" his mega-star-image like Fan, Raees, JHMS and - very distinctly - in Zero.

I love his courage to do those movies especially after his birthday 2015 when it was clear with the campaign against Dilwale (more impactful than with MNIK because of giving in to Barkha Dutt's insistance to give a statement about intolerance) that from there on none of his movies would be untouched by negative campaigns (regardless the quality).

I wonder if - when released in this times - OSO, RNBDJ, CE and Happy New Year (and even ChakDe) would have known their success in India they had at their times...
