https://youtu.be/SzSmNUcnvrgAlia is born in India yet has a British citizenship coz her mum has got one.

I’m honestly surprised that she has been brought up in Mumbai all her life and is earning millions working in India but she doesn’t want to become an Indian legally . 👀

Even in the video I’ve posted on top she talks about taking up dual citizenship (India doesn’t allow that ) but not about giving up British one in favour of an Indian one.

Because she is legally allowed to make millions in India and still have the privilege to have a highly sought after passport.

I get it but compared to the pride of being an Indian these hassles are nothing. I’m sure they will have travel agencies look into it and since these celebs travel so extensively they will get visa s much more easily.

I'm assuming that it's tax benefits. That's the simplest reason

I am not too familiar with the UK-India tax treaties, but given she spends most of the year in India, I doubt she gets any benefits. Plus aren't taxes higher in UK

One reason could be tax. Other is simply the perks of a British citizenship. I have couple of friends who were born in US and lived there for few years but now studying in India in public universities. But they haven't given up their US citizenship. One reason was that the bureaucracy in India takes so long that between the process of changing citizenship, there's a period of time when you become stateless that is neither a citizen of India or the other country and that's a risky place to be wrt travel etc if you don't know how long the whole process will take. They would pay fees in terms of international students even though they had been living here for years now.

Second reason is simply the perks, after graduation I suppose a lot of them would go back to US to work for higher wages, get better opportunities for their major. Those who choose for PhD have it cushy, since you can skip a lot of tests and unnecessary hassle by being a citizen. Academia becomes a lot easier if you are already a citizen of your proposed country.

Not that any of this applies to Alia, 😆 but I'm pretty sure there are loopholes in and around which gives her perks to escape tax brackets by not being an Indian citizen. If she's planning to deliver in UK, being a citizen makes it a whole lot easier.

If it is tax benefit than that’s really shallow of Alia coz she is earning so much 💰 on Indian soil working primarily in Indian movies.

The least she can do is give back to the Indian government via taxes for the betterment of the country. 😬

What’s really ironic in all this is that Alia wasn’t even born in Britain but in Mumbai so she had all the rights to be an Indian citizen yet her parents chose the other.

Guess it’s more cooler to be British than Indian. 🙄

PS - Similarly, Alia’s child could also be a British citizen coz the baby s mom is one.
