Just watched it and liked it. Honestly, Gauri Shinde is one of the best female directors in Bollywood. I loved her movie English Vinglish in 2012 the most, but this one is also pretty good, even if diametrically different.
The coming-of-age story from a female perspective is refreshing. The performances were damn good. SRK in a cameo was superb, Alia was convincing and the supporting characters were well fleshed out.
Though Kaira (Alia's character) was messed up, the reason for her psychological instability was well-established. I liked the way the director maintains a nuanced vision throughout and the movie doesn't come across as preachy in any way.
The biggest flaw is that the movie doesn't engage you throughout, only in parts. Some of the moments are pure gold, but somehow it doesn't feel like a cohesive film. This inconsistency is the biggest drawback of this otherwise extremely promising film.
Has anyone seen this movie?
Alia is sometimes raw, sometimes magnetic. It's not her best performance, but she does try.
