I had no clue these characters were created by someone who identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community. That was a little nice to know, though Disney obviously did not do them justice.

Yes, since Disney had a code against LGBTQ representation, the "Hays Code" this creator made a deliberate use of the stereotypes. The fact that even today, there's widespread outrage against one second kiss scene in Disney's Buzz Lightyear and it funded Florida's Don't say Gay bill.
