This isn’t an India/Pakistan thing, people need to refrain from taking it there. It’s a wider issue within Bollywood. As someone who does enjoy watching Bollywood films one of my main issues with the industry is how brazenly they plagiarise work from other countries, whilst attempting to claim they were ‘inspired’ or sometimes just outright denying they’ve lifted the script or lyrics or music from elsewhere.

Unfortunately Bollywood isn’t regulated and held accountable for this type of thing. To the contrary they are praised to the high heavens for work that lacks an ounce of originality, and butchers the source material.

I still can’t get over the fact that Ghajini is considered a milestone film. It was unoriginal (rip-off of Memento), completely butchered a multilayered script and had subpar acting and direction.

I also can’t fathom how Amir Khan of all people is considered an innovative actor. Most of his movies have been unofficially lifted from other sources. He absolutely has a few gems in his filmography, however no more than most actors of his generation.

The truth is Bollywood is at its best when strong original scripts are helmed by good producers. Unfortunately, most films that meet this criteria are made on a smaller budget and thus get limited publicity and traction. The mainstream trajectory of Bollywood is on a downward spiral because formulaic scripts are becoming more and more popular. This encourages lazy writing and null creativity.

Mainstream Bollywood now either:

1) Plays on nostalgia by remaking classic Bollywood films, remixing classic Bollywood or Pakistani songs and/or using the child of a classic actor to helm their film.

2) Lazily remake classic British or American films, and tout that as ‘strong content’.

3) Lazily remake films from other regions of India

4) Make a quick buck of nonsensical Masala films

I genuinely think mainstream Bollywood is in the midst of a creativity crisis.
