Can’t the parents just divide up their wealth while they r alive n give whoever whatever they want. Tht is wat I have seen happen quite often.
yea, that would make sense right? but unfortunately many parents don't make divisions in their lifetime. I think easier would be to make a will. at least in india, a person can write off their earned wealth to whoever they wish -- whether it is charity, religious institution, relatives or bunch of random friends. because it is money they earned, they have the right to do with it as they please including not giving to their children if they so wish. as far as I know that applies to any community. the problem is with inherited property -- that you can't just write off to whoever. so in that case, it would be better to divide while they are alive so that adopted/foster children can get their share I guess...
I know of this distant relative who was adopted. everyone knows about it. he inherited everything from his parents and there was no problem in the succession. from what I heard none of the relatives of the family had any problem with the adoption and he gets along well with everyone and is super helpful. so he was never rejected and no one questioned. so yea, maybe the parents wrote it down so that there wouldn't be problems? 🤷
