so I watched the episode today and it struck me that the reason I like this dance is because they didn't use other music for most of it, especially the conversations. instead, it was the BGM of imlie-aryan and it suits the mood and sets the tone. am really not a fan of random insertion of movie songs -- feels like it takes away from the drama scene rather than add to it. 🤷
from the conversation, two things struck out:
1. "you are free to see whatever you want to see. the good in sundar, the bad in uday and demon in me. I dont' care" -- it is clear that Aryan still believes that Imlie has a negative opinion of him and does not see him as a good person. it bothers him that he becomes antagonistic to her criticism because he sees it as personal rather than constructive advice.
2. Aryan talks about her smile makes me think that it is her smile that made him fall in love with her.
look at how he describes her smile:
"you are happy when you cook for yourself
but you are the happiest when you make fun of me
when you smile, it looks like someone freed a caged bird
when you laugh it feels like there is music playing in surround sound
when you laugh, even I feel like..."
how would he have ended the sentence? does she make him smile? he appreciates her laugh and finds it beautiful, magical and musical. it is significant because women are often told not to smlie and laugh. even if we see in dramas, many female leads never truly laugh or smile. instead, they are sombre, proper bahu. often, it is the female villains who truly chuckle, laugh and smile. it is as if good bahu are not allowed to feel the good range of emotion or express it. they can't be cheeky, they can't smile for themselves, they can't laugh out loud like a happy bird, they can't laugh loud and instead have to laugh quietly. so it is rather nice to see a man express an ode to her smile, her laugh and talk a little about how she makes him feel. she teases him and instead of getting annoyed, a secret part of him finds her beautiful in that smile. 😘
Am reminded of this old song called "smile" by Uncle Kracker. the chorus goes:
"You make me smile like the sun
Fall out of bed, sing like a bird
Dizzy in my head, spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold, buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Oh, you make me smile"
