Right after independence, the thought was to implement 3-language system all over India - mother tongue + English + Hindi/another Indian language if mother tongue is Hindi. Most southern states did it. Except, Hindi belt still hasn't. I learned Hindi rom Class 5. How many from Hindi heartland learn a southern language?

2ndly, Hindi being given importance would leave the rest at a distinct disadvantage where official business is concerned. For ex, admission tests. Because there's always going to a difference between how a native Hindi speaker uses the language versus a non native. Which is why southern states to this day insist on English.

Sanskrit should have been our national language. 🙏

I wouldn't have minded Sanskrit being national language.

For one, it's neat knowing a classical language and being able to read ancient texts for yourself.

For another, everyone would be at equal disadvantage 😆

I remember we were taught sanskrit in our school as a third language from class 5 to class 7 i think. And i was actually disappointed when it was later discontinued in higher classes. I would have loved to learn any of the south or other languages too...

Anyway my love for Hindi remained intact and I even got the highest marks in Hindi in my school, in class X board exams 😎 (sorry for bragging) 😆

I also want to learn..it's said to be the most scientific language. Was good at the subject in school..but lost touch. And nowadays most of the schools don't teach the subject coz of lack of teachers.

There is usually an option na, to either choose between Hindi or Sanskrit in higher classes. A lot of people used to choose Sanskrit over Hindi because it was extremely easy to score more marks in it. I bet majority of them toppers in Sanskrit can't decipher a sentence now. 😆

South Indian languages, specially Malayalam is a bit difficult to learn. Kannada has some Sanskrit words so can grasp that..though script is not easy..but give ur best efforts and can do it.

People here r very sweet n helpful..and eager to teach

Same! we had Sanskrit till 8th Standard. It was one of my favourite subjects not just because of the language but our Sanskrit teacher was the best teacher in the world. Never met a friendly yet strict teacher in my life. ❤️

I was really really bad at Hindi, more than me my parents took sigh of relief once I passed Hindi in Xth standard. 😆

Malayalam has to be one of the most difficult Indian languages that I have come across. Even if you try and understand a few words here and there, it is very difficult to pronounce even for a South Indian from a different state. In case, I end up working in Kerala, I'll totally be a hypocrite and say, let us all speak in English and make merry. 😆 Kannada, Telugu and Tamil are still easier in comparison, I feel.
