The biggest problem in the Hindi film industry is their “snooty” attitude . Most filmmakers feel they are very cool and look down upon masala movies . Only Salman khan stars in those movies but those films are never given the respect they deserve and are ripped apart as meaningless work vis a vis the numbers they make . In contrast the “arty” movies are usually feted and awarded irrespective of the box office numbers.

South films are basically about heroism filled with action, great songs and emotion packed in . Since BW is not making such films - the South films have hijacked them . The numbers in the North India for the dubbed movies is a serious wake up call for the Hoity Toity BW lot who feel they are better than everyone.

Yes it is on a decline, but that is not due to South movies. I barely know anyone who has suddenly switched to watching South instead of Bollywood. One or two South movies doing well is all it is.. but it is still just South Indians watching their movies. The target of Bollywood was always North and why it is on a decline is because North Indian states' have their own cinema which is on a rise as well. Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and NRI communities are watching Punjabi movies more than Bollywood now.. and that was a big part of Hindi cinema's target audience.

There is no one reason for Bollywood's decline. A variety of reasons have contributed to it including changing audience trends, increasing competition from regional cinema, piracy, and more.

They need good writers and directors to compete..bw has a lack of them right now. And stop the remakes.

Now they also call bollywood urduwood because they say the industry is run by terrorists and dawood... and they sell the south as patriots who respect hinduism... etc. So the problem is bigger than we think.

I don't think Bollywood is finished yet . SLB, Rajkumar Hirani still have pan India and international market . But Bahubali,RRR and KGF showed that if we make films which is interesting for all cinephiles not just regional movie goers it will attract even international audience. And the success of these movie will definitely inspire south movie makers to make movie for pan India. There is no dearth of talented film makers in south . Only hindrance they had is the limited budget but now the market is open , budget constraints will not there for right subject .

But if bollywood still depends on stardom it will eventually loss audience. I know many fans will disagree but since last few years if any movie made money, the reason is appealing film making not because of any star. With the arrival of OTT platform the movie lovers taste has drastically changed. They find many of the previously enjoyed movies as silly now . I guess the last movie bollywood movie with highest collection from south is Padmavaat. As a cinephile I believe none of the Hindi movie released after Padmavaat demands theatre experience.

Now a days what happens in bollywood is go with the best available superstars. I feel a movie like chhapaak should never been made with that sort of budget that too with a typical bollywood heroine Deepika. I believe the budget of 83 is way above budget unmindful of the target audience.

There are many movies which would have made the same impact or better impact even with different actors because the making and objective vision of the directors matters these days. But I guess the mafia , nepotism will be the deciding factor in bollywood and it will eventually have the impact on quality.

As much as I hate Kangana I believe she is vile now because of the mafia in bollywood. Her TWMR is still the highest female grosser. Though the director has many good movies in his credit TWMR was his highest grosser as well . Kangana got appreciation but it was way less than the hype and praise a star kid get after delivering a super hit even if the maker is known for consistent BO performance. None of the male star speaks about these hypocrisy openly but even they face these kind of biased treatment.

As long as bollywood focus on building the career of their family and friends they won't explore the cinematic excellence and will slowly crumble.

Bollywood has gone through many ups and downs. Lull phases are natural in the industry cycle. I would hardly call it finished.

While Bollywood may not be churning out larger than life blockbusters, I personally have been very pleased with the direction it has been going. Creators are exploring different kinds of storytelling and characters. While they might not be setting box office or streaming records - Badhai Do, Gangubai, Gehraiyaan, Jalsa, Sharmaji Namkeen all these films are good films with unique perspectives.

There is room for high-octane hypermasculine masala action films. But there is room for all other kinds of cinema as well.
