It had all started today morning. He had a meeting so he had left early promising her he would take her out for lunch. Soon after he had left, Baa had called and asked her to come over as Pakhi was refusing to come out of her room. She had rushed over to their house and in the process completely forgotten her mobile at home. After convincing Pakhi, she had wanted to leave but Baa had asked her for a cup of tea. Just as she had given tea to her Bapuji had entered and Baa had asked her to make something for him and Bapuji hadn't refused either. Maybe he did like her food that much that he didn't realize the time was already 11.30. After making some snacks for Bapuji, she had hurried out when neighbors had arrived to talk to Baa and Baa being Baa had asked her to cook for them. She had tried to protest meekly but Baa had rebuked her and she had submitted. A loud knock had interrupted her when she was doing the dishes and she had looked up to see her husband storming in. The clock by then had read 2.30. He straightaway told Baa in front of the neighbor ladies that if she needed anyone to help her with the household chores, he would happily hire someone but he wouldn't tolerate his wife being treated like one and that she would leave with him immediately. Without waiting for her answer, he had entered the kitchen, took her by the hand and out of the house. Their drive back home had been very quiet. She had tried to strike a conversation and received complete silence. As soon as they reached home, he had gone inside the bedroom. She had found her phone and the 28 missed calls from him made her understand that she had screwed up real bad this time. Sighing to herself she gathered up courage to face the storm.

As she entered their room, she saw him standing by the window facing away from her. She walked slowly towards him and as she got closer to him, she heard his low voice

"Why?"

His low voice sounded dejected and she felt as if someone had stabbed her. With a trembling voice she recalled

"In the initial stages of my previous marriage, whenever I tried to say no to any of Baa's orders, she would complain to her son and Mr. Shah would punish me. He would never hurt me physically but he had a thrill in breaking things that I treasured. The first time I dared to disobey, he broke a little dancing China doll that my brother had gifted, next time it was my mother's bangle and so on. Oh... I usually had to sleep outside the bedroom on the floor for the next two days. He made sure I had no bedding with me. Slowly I realized that fixing those things back and sleeping out in the cold was much more difficult than obeying Baa. Then it became a practice... a habit... I never dared to say no...."

He curled his fingers tightly, so tightly that his knuckles were almost white. If Mr. Shah was in front of him, he would have landed in the hospital for daring to treat her so badly. He took a deep breath trying to calm himself when he heard her soft voice.

"I am trying so hard to cut off the habit... I tried today, I hated it when those ladies came and I had to cook for them, I tried but the moment I saw Baa's stern face, I simply couldn't move... I am... sorry... sorry... I..."

"If I ask you something will you answer honestly?"

She looked up, he still had not turned around. She pulled herself together.

"Yes"

"Do you trust me?"

She had not expected this from him. Going closer to him she wrapped her arms around him and placed her head on his back. He didn't respond.

"With my life...".

"Don't you know by now that I would walk through fire but won't allow even the heat to reach you?"

She clutched him tightly and nodded through her tears.

"You are my wife... mine... and I won't let anyone harm you ever. Don't you forget that... ever..."

She stood on her toes so that her lips met his ears and she whispered.

"Never... I am sorry I forgot today... I won't do that again..."

He turned around and looked into her eyes.

"Promise?"

She nodded quickly. He bent down and captured her lips. His hands moved up to her back and he undid her dori. She pulled away from the kiss and looked up at him as she felt the thread come undone.

"Oh... I was thinking we should make sure you don't ever forget that you are mine... shouldn't we?"

She looked down trying hard not to blush under his intense gaze as her hands made their way to undo his shirt.

Two hours later as they cuddled naked under the sheets in each others arms, she knew she was forgiven and he knew she understood.
