Hm, I'm not sure about the law but there are surely people who actually practice bigamy/polygamy, so... if all involved parties are aware and make a conscious choice, then the dynamics surely play out differently.

ETA – The law actually differs from country to country, some allow it, others don't, but not being legal definitely doesn't stop people from practicing it, if they want to.
