From what I gathered from Wikipedia, Amitabh who's a poet & Rakhee are lovers but she marries Shashi, whose fav poet is none other than Amit

Amit's wedding gift to them is his poetry book and she recites the poem from the book on their wedding night as per her husband's wish

The song is considered Sahir Ludhianvi's masterpiece
