Having said this maybe u didn't like Gangubai...but it has been liked in general and Alia's performance has been praised to the skies.....

Its OK....no movie has ever been accepted by 100% of the audience...as long as majority likes it...its all OK.

Define disasters? I remember most of his movies being pretty big hits. Also, Devdas wasn’t my cup of tea but it was huge. Big enough that even the BBC back then picked it up to play with English subtitles for a wider audience.

Alia is not there yet. I know everyone's celebrating Gangu's success, so didn't want to post a meh review, but there are false notes in the acting, too. Could be SLB's script or direction, but the badass moments were the ones I already saw in the trailer. The rest was simply meh. Even her body language was meh except for those small snippets. You could easily tell where Alia Bhatt, A-list superstar, was aware of how the audience would perceive certain moments.

Whereas in 7 Khoon Maaf or Dirty Picture, you'd be hard pressed to find a wrong moment. There was no PC or Vidya on screen.

ETA. My expectations for Gangu were super high after everything I saw on IF😆. I was honestly expecting a movie about the rise of a mafia queen. Instead, it was a typical SLB sob story. Too loud, too garish, too dramatic where it didn't need to be. And pulling back exactly where it shouldn't have. Where was Gangu's criminality? This one was practically a saint in disguise at some points.

That’s cuz everyone on here just overreacts to anything Alia does. They did the same thing for Highway and UP, they pretended like a new icon is born or something. Meanwhile the general public doesn’t care to that level. Career wise - yes she did well and some of her movies may be hits but we just saw someone say she’s better than Madhuri and Sridevi. That’s how far the delusion has seeped in. You can’t be a Madhuri or Sridevi just on the basis of acting. You need to have more and Alia doesn’t

Even Rani in Black didn’t get this much recognition even though her role was truly pathbreaking.

I do agree abt vidya in tdp…but I don’t think pc in saat khoon maaf makes the cut for a flawless performance …I would say barfi would be one but not 7khoon.
there were several false notes in there particularly during the older Suzzana moments, the dialogue delivery that deliberately puts stress on certain “cool” Urdu words and self aware pauses …it’s not free flowing …u can tell it’s pc trying to act

Tbh I’d rate aliaas performance better than PCs in saat khoon maaf…but still lesser than what tabu did in Chandni bar ..chandni bar dosent have swag and all but the sheer heart wrenching quality tabu bought there of the circumstances so dire, I couldn’t quite experience in gangubai …except maybe in the initial portions which were highly effective …once gangu gets into “swag queen” mode it becomes less emotional and more playing to the galleries / manipulative …which is what they wanted I suppose ..but the decision to make her all cinematically swag undercuts the emotional experience one has seeing her go through extremely real , horrific things

I saw Susanna as a performer herself, always putting on an act for the men and even the kid/young man. So the parts you mentioned seemed quite in character in to me.

With Alia, I didn't see consistency even in the swag. Could be SLB's direction, but she seemed enough aware as an actor to not let it happen. It comes across as she simply didn't have the heft to maintain it frame to frame. Not to mention the watered down story.
