Why do you get your jollies from harassing untrained unpaid volunteers? The moderators often piss me off to with their locked threats and complete lack of nuance or effort in addressing issues. But then I hold back and realize that they are people who have a life outside IF and are being asked to do a thankless job with no reward. Been there, done that. It's shit. I'd be more rogue if I didn't have sympathy for mods who have to clean up everyone else's shit.

Why do people do it though? Are there any perks?

And what if every single MOD quit? Would the site moderate itself or would it become a paid position, like it should be.

I personally would never work for free for a "For Profit" Corporation. Volunteering should be saved for a good cause & organizations that need our time.

I can't speak for others. For me, I was young and naive. It's a power trip and makes you feel important. I was a moderator on another band forum which was also voluntary but I got autographed stuff and thank you notes - so maybe I expected perks. But in IF there were none. I quit when I grew up and realized there was no way I could moderate the forum ethically.

Most likely, it would become the wild wild west. Legally, most websites and forums are not required to moderate or censor much. There is some content that is taken seriously like child p0rnography, human trafficking, or obvious criminal activity. But beyond that, there is no reason why a forum should stop two factions from going at each other much less name-calling celebs.

There is also AI. I believe IF does employ AI moderation and censorship, but I don't know the parameters.

Pretty sure mods on TV star forums used to work up to earn the privilege of acquiring the TV star's number.

On other sections like games, love/relationships there are no perks.

On this forum there's always so much beef going on and I got the feeling some mods liked going on a power trip in shielding certain fan groups they were friends with.

What perks could they possibly wish for in the love/relationships section of the forum? 🥺 and What were you doing there? 🥺

^ I dunno but given I saw mods of the game section complain about endlessly archiving topics and what a thankless job it was there obviously should be something in it for non TV section mods.

I dunno what challenges mods would have faced in the love/relationship forum, I didn't browse our long enough but imagine it's still thankless.

The admin could give vouchers/monetary compensation but I don't think that would happen in a million years despite minting money off TV stars.

____________

Come to think of it, countless people are stuck in a rut working for large organisations slogging away, not knowing their true worth to be able to negotiate better pay. All mods should strike up a union and refuse to work until there is some sort of compensation.
