Lately it seems South indian movies are more popular in India and worldwide Bollywood seemed to be more popular during the 2000s with the more NRI focused movies (like the SRK movies back then).
Thoughts? And why is it declining?

Why do you think it has declined?
People have access to content from all over the world, now.
Yes how long will people hold on to old times
In last 3 years or so, yes.
Otherwise earlier films like 3 Idiots, MNIK, D3, Dangal, ETT, ZNMD etc did great business worldwide.
In recent few years I guess Padmavat, Bajirao Mastani were other films which did well as they are multi starrer period films. Sanju did really good business.
Kabir Singh, War, Sher Shah have done well too. Sher Shah has got lot of appreciation from South as well.
But overall popularity has sort of declined and we have not seen a mega BB like Bahubali series in Bollywood or record breakers like 3I, D3, Dangal, ETT, Dabangg.
I feel senior stars have either given flops, or cut down their work and taken a lot of breaks.
And new stars are yet to find their niche or cement their popularity among masses.
A lot of films made of late, are more watchable on TV and not worth going to theatres for. I think Netflix, Amazon, Hotstar, Zee 5 etc have dented films and given audience more options for entertainment and so have many new game apps which offer chances to earn money while playing as well.
Finally the pandemic has also ensured audience is not that keen to go to theatres unless they really like a film or star. When you can watch from comfort of your home, why will you go to cinema hall?
My last watch was Bahubali series in theatre. Never saw anything else in theatre after Bahubali The Conclusion.
Earlier stars also went on global tours and film festivals, concerts to promote films or connect with fans worldwide or explore new markets. Pandemic has restricted that outreach as well. So the decline in popularity is a given.
Bollywood is in a transitional and crisis stage now the way it was in mid 80s when old stars had either gone in semi retirement mode or begun to look jaded and multiple new boys and girls came every other year but failed to catch fancy of masses.
They will remain in limbo as pandemic is not ending and no new stars have enough charisma to take audience by storm.
