 Last weekend when Amitabh Bachchan was in Chennai for the music release of Kamal Hassan starrer Dasavatharam, he fulfilled a promise he had made 25 years ago.In 1983 Amitabh had met with an accident on the sets of Coolie and was admitted to Chennai's KJ hospital, where he stayed for about seven months. AB's blood platelet count was extremely low and the hospital had organised all the blood, when he needed blood transfusion. As a gesture of gratitude, Bachchan had promised to return whenever the hospital needed him. Amitabh Bachchan confirms and says, "My friend and filmmaker Mr S Ramanathan was requested by KJ Hospital in Chennai to organise a visit during my short stay for the music launch of Dasavatharam." AB adds, "The same hospital had arranged for blood when I was suffering from a low platelet count because of the accident I had while shooting for Coolie. I had promised that I would visit them in future." The hospital which is having a free treatment programme for children with cardiac ailments sent a request to director S Ramanathan to arrange for Bachchan to visit them. Bachchan further adds, "Children from poor homes who are unable to bear the cost of medical care were being treated under a compassionate scheme by the department of cardiology." AB also contributed Rs 11 lakh for the patients under the scheme. |
