Why is 2002 such a bad year for Bollywood?

Only 3 clean hits that year - Devdas, Raaz, Saathiya. Rest are average or flops. It's probably the worst year pre-pandemic. Any idea what happened?

Not too sure but I think Ekta Kapoor's serials were at an ALL TIME HIGH around 2001-02 period, and it could've impacted the business of films to an extent.

The industry was also going through a paradigm shift around that time, with several new actors, directors, singers entering the industry, and many 90s A-listers started fading / getting tough competition from new talents.

LOL. Made me giggle thinking about Tulsi and Parvarti suddenly. But really that can't be the reason. 2003 was a great year with many new changes. 2001 was good too with Gadar, K3G, Lagaan etc.

That could be a reason. Up until 2001, it was still the era of the 90s stars -- Kajol, Karishma, even Madhuri et al were working, and people were still into the 90s rom com stuffs. From 2003 onwards Rani Preity etc took over and started the era of urban rom coms like KHNH Hum Tum etc. There was indeed a paradigm shift.

hits doesnt matter films like awara pagal dewana, om jai jagdesh , raaz , rishtey, shararat, tumse acha kaun hai , pyar dewana hota hai , mere yaar ki shaadi hai , kuch tum kaho kuch hum kahien , kitne door kitne pass, hum tumhare hain sanam , hum kisi se kam nahi , dil vil pyar vyar , dil hai tumhara etc were good films

Because Aamir took a break, Salman had a lean phase and rather more controversies.

Many newcomers were coming and new types of films were being made.

I remember most films were faltu and at that time even Devdas was not seen as the kind of big success it is now. It was expected to do much better given its cast and budget.

Many established actresses of 90s were also getting married and leaving films. Raveena, Karishma, Sonali, Kajol all began to cut down their work. 90s stars were beginning to look a bit aged. Newcomers did not live up to hype. Hrithik, Kareena, Rani, Preity all had lack of success. I think Rani only had Saathiya as success. And Kareena only had Ajnabee as a success that year if I am not mistaken.

Some audiences did not like increasing skin show and intimate scenes in films. I remember Raaz created huge controversy with its intimate scenes and skin show.

It is not serials that ruined it for Bollywood as most serials were late night slots whereas films have peak slots during day and evening.

But it is transitional phase for Bollywood with older stars and filmmakers slowly fading and new stories, new character actors, music, filmmakers coming up.

2002 was also a disappointment compared to 2001 which had films for all sections of society such as Gadar, Lagaan, DCH, K3G that 2002 did not have.

Newcomers take time to fit in or find their niche. Old stars also took breaks or had to reinvent or had a bad phase.

Such years do happen time to time. It is cyclical.

undoubtly better than many overrated film , watch pyar dewana hota hai perfect govinda comedy then mere yaar ki shaadi hai one of jimmy shergil memorable performance , rishtay another good one anil kapoor with karishma kapoor ...all these films were good for their time ,,,,kuch hum kahien kuch tum kaho had a repeat value , and the least shararat as it was quite boring but it did shown great bonding amonsgt elders and young generation

That was the part of moive but it was an emotional scene rather than comedy
