Chapter 87
Turning Point
The night wasn’t over yet. Piya didn’t want it to be over. Nightlife was bustling in the city, lights illuminated, and crowds refusing to shrink. She skipped merrily in front of Abhay, the latter walking slowly with hands in his coat pockets.
This is the best night of my life.
Abhay chuckled at her thoughts, and watched his beautiful bride dance in the streets. He was never a fan of watching movies, but this sight felt like something out of them. She reveled in the energy her excitement and fulfilment gave her, and wanted to stay out late tonight.
Don’t run off without me, jaan. What if I fall behind?
Piya turned around and shook her head, throwing her arms behind her back.
You’ll find me, silly. You always do. Now fast, where’s that speed of yours?
The biggest surprise of the honeymoon had passed, now for the remaining, just some quality alone time together. Abhay couldn’t have felt happier. He smiled after her, wide and bright, dimples included. She made him feel so human. He would forever be thankful.
I never ever want to lose you. Wherever you go, I’ll follow.
Who knows how far they would have gone, if the arrival of bad weather hadn’t stopped time. The winds began to rush, and the birds took to the sky. Piya stopped in her tracks, and looked at the sky after pulling her hair back. Clouds began to gather and thunder boomed. Abhay took her hand and pulled her to the side, near an alleyway. The crowds began to take cover as well, moving inside to any shop or building they could find.
“What’s happening, all of a sudden?”
Abhay didn’t reply, but peered his head outside into the street. It took a minute or so for the weather to settle again, but the ground looked strange. Cracked asphalt and rising soil in some odd places, like something was to burst out of the ground. He felt some tension and tightness in his chest. He picked up some scents, those of his kind. They were wandering in hiding around the same area, just as confused as he was. Some were as alert as he was.
“Abhay, I think it’s clearing up now.”
“Yeah…”
He made her stay in the cover of the alleyway, and stepped out into view. There was nothing to poke at his instincts, and he shared glances with the others watching around the streets. Those of the supernatural world always picked out each other with ease amongst the crowd, that of which flooded the streets again. Back to normal. But Abhay wasn’t sure.
Could she be–?
Piya appeared from behind, palm over her stomach. It wouldn’t stop rumbling. Abhay looked back and smiled, taking her hand again.
“Is everything okay?” She asked, holding onto his arm. He nodded.
“I believe so. Hungry?” He replied, hearing another growl of her stomach. Piya hid her face and nodded. It must’ve been loud. “Let’s find someplace to eat.”
Abhay usually watched Piya eat as he indulged in a glass of wine, but this time, he kept his eyes on the window. Piya looked his way in between bites and worried that something was about to go wrong. He was hyperfocused on the streets outside. Asking him further would only bring a deceptive smile on his face, like nothing had gone wrong to begin with. But she had an idea, and hoped it wasn’t true. She ate quietly, and Abhay whisked them away as soon as the bill was paid.
The balcony of their vacation home was large, enough for another room. Piya changed into her nightie, and joined Abhay outside. He leaned over the balcony railing and stared out into the sky. She snuck up from behind, and hugged him. She could feel the muscles in his back relax once she touched him.
Just because she didn’t say it out loud, didn’t mean she didn’t have an idea.
“Is she nearby?”
Abhay looked back and hugged her tight. He shook his head.
“I have a feeling that she is. But everything seems to have settled.” He gestured towards the large futon, setup with a few pillows and a blanket. There was warmth in the air tonight, perfect for sleeping outside. Abhay suggested it, that way he could keep an eye on the surroundings and also stay by her side. Piya cupped his cheeks, and kissed him.
“Relax.”
“Using my own line on me?” He asked, lifting an eyebrow.
“Yes, because you need to hear it too sometimes.”
Piya held onto his arm and pulled him to the futon. But his hands were twitchy, and eyes glancing to and fro. She could see the red flash and flood his irises after they lay down, shadows wrapping around his fingers as claws. They only did that when he was very on edge. Piya took those hands, and gasped when one of the sharp nails cut her.
“What are you doing, Piya?” He hissed, startling her. He took her palm and checked that it was healing. She looked frightened. Abhay sighed, and shut his eyes tight. “Please, be careful, even around me.”
“I’m fine. But you? What happened all of a sudden?”
Abhay touched their foreheads and gently grasped her hands, fingers entwined. He had a bad feeling, and that amplified his need to keep her in his sight for as long as possible.
“Just stay with me at all times. It’s for your safety.”
Piya nodded, and pushed him onto the futon, burying herself in his arms. She pressed her cheek into the crook of his neck. She could understand his concern.
“Don’t worry. I will stay here, only in your sight.”

The Raichand mansion was empty, of course except for Siddharth and Mandu. They were so used to Abhay being around all the time, that it was strange for him to be gone for more than a day or two. The couple stayed in their bedroom for the evening.
Staring up at the ceiling, Mandu clutched a bundle of clothes in her arms, thinking heavily about the cries of a child at the cabin in the forest. They sounded just like his when they were separated, full of fear and pain. She looked over to Siddharth, who was sitting upright and working away at office work. She grasped his arm and sat up.
“Is something the matter, love?” He asked, looking over and kissing her forehead. “What are you thinking?”
“No…nothing…” Her voice wavered, and Siddharth knew she was hiding something.
“Are you sure? I don’t think so.”
He set his laptop aside and took her hands. Mandu tried to leave, but he held her tighter.
“I’m not going anywhere, and I won’t let you go anywhere, until you speak your mind. Because right now, you’re trying very hard to hide your thoughts from me.”
She knew it would be difficult to hide things from him, but she tried anyways.
“Can we go back to the cabin?” She blurted out. “That child…”
“But there was nothing there, only that Vitael. We don’t know how dangerous she is.”
She frantically shook her head. There was an unusual restlessness in her heart, that feeling of loss they shared when Vaibhav passed. She had to check, just one more time. Siddharth sighed, smoothing her hair, and went into a few minutes of thought. There was a lot wrong he could see happening with this decision. Chances of either or both of them getting hurt, Mandu getting attached to whatever they find there, amongst other things. There was always a soft spot for children in her heart, no doubt. The situation was no different. Sometimes, Siddharth wished they could have another of their own again. But vampires couldn’t have children, not without the use of complex magic. They discussed this many decades ago, but in the fear of losing another child during the risky pregnancy, they dropped the idea. Even the wiccan advised against it.
You worry about this child, love. I can see that.
“Please, Siddharth? Just one time.”
Siddharth pursed his lips, and looked out the window. Just one look. He hoped it was empty. He hesitantly nodded.
“Alright, let’s go. But this will be the last time.”
He needed to be stern, for her own good. She jumped out of bed and rushed outside. He followed behind her, unable to remember where exactly the cabin was located. But it seemed like she knew well, too well.
