Did you notice strange thing in Bollywood ? During any movie promotions, interviews, media bytes, most bollywood stars speak in English instead of Hindi despite them promotion Hindi movie.

If you look in the south, most actors/actress speak in their regional language during their interviews or during movie promotion. Yesterday I watch Allu Arjun's Pushpa pre-release event where Allu and most of the cast were speaking in TELUGU instead of ENGLISH.

If you look at education numbers, its the South which has highest literacy(98% in most states) and has the MOST ENGLISH speaking population in India. Despite that during promoting their movies they opt to speak in a language in which the movie is being produced. For e.g. if you see Nithya or Priyamani they would speak in Telugu if they are promoting Telugu movie and in Tamil if they are promoting Tamil or even Kannada or Malayalam as per needs.

I am not saying Bollywood actors need to know all those languages but at least speak in HINDI. Why this superiority complex ?

Also if you watch promotion videos down in South most actors are down to earth humble without any kind of ego. They firstly praise all their cast and crew instead of keep on talking about themselves, like most Bollywood actors do. Bollywood actor's are busy talking about how he/she went for the role, how much they practised, made body, went on keto diet blah blah .... which has nothing to do with ACTING. But in south even actors like Prabhas, NTR, Ram Charan, Allu never talk about how difficult was the shot and how they prepared for that. They will immediately say its directors effort and vision which made the movie beautiful. They hate self praising. Here is Bollywood most actors are so self obsessed, even for shaving the head for the role they will talk as if they had done big sacrifice.

Today's actors are mainly from urban areas and even filmmakers, writers say today's actors think in English, they have less skill with Hindi or any Indian language.

South actors are more humble and give due credit to filmmakers, writers and music directors unlike Bollywood stars who are full of attitude and in perpetual self promotion mode.

I find it amusing how they struggle to speak in Hindi even in interviews on Hindi channels.

Not that their English is any good. Most of them use slang or even internet chat lingo. Their English is not proper either and their grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation are poor.

Today's lot is not like Amitabh Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Raaj Kumar who were able to speak Hindi, English, Urdu all languages perfectly in interviews as well.

I guess some of them speak in English hoping to be watched by their fans from Northeast, Southern states and foreign countries where people understand Hindi less and are likely to know English more.

And they try to form a more elite/urban image to appeal to urban youth or perhaps find speaking Indian languages a bit 'downmarket'?

A lot of them have tried to crack into international markets or project themselves as international stars which is why, especially since 2000s a lot of Bollywood stars speak English with a fake American/British accent.

I guess they do not want to connect with masses and perhaps get carried away by online fans who mock stars who speak Indian languages or endorse massy products like flour or rice or play rural or small town characters.

If you notice, nowadays Bollywood has no films based on rural areas or urban poor. Today's actors do urban roles or NRI type characters and hardly play a villager or a working class person the way stars of previous generations used to.

Perhaps this is reason for certain elitism, unwillingness to learn or hone skill in Indian languages, trying to speak in fake foreign accent and colouring their hair and skin to look fairer or more like foreigners hoping foreign media, brands, magazines, movie markers will notice them.

Stars of regional cinema are more rooted in their language and culture. You can see Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Bhojpuri stars also take pride in speaking their own language like South stars. Upcoming talents from Northeast states also wear own dress, language and culture with pride.

That is not the same case with Bollywood.

because hindi speaking = local

whereas English speaking is not rice-plate eating, it's tajmahal create.

and i guess because they wanna connect to a wider audience ....

isn't English a national language too? Some people can't even speak Hindi like those kids in fabulous lives of bollywood wives.

In fact the scripts are in english instead of Hindi.

During Family Man, Raj and DK revealed that only Amitabh and Manoj Bajpai actually ask for their scripts to be in Hindi.

In fact most actors hindi diction is quite bad except the older lot. Neena Gupta , Nawazuddin also have a good diction

😆 This is as true as saying there's less nepotism in the South.
