Many of the young female actors at Rajeev Masand's Roundtable 2019 took Pooh as an iconic character and their inspiration for taking up acting. Tara Sutaria,Saloni Batra,Ananya Pandey and Geetika Vaidya Ohlyan were the participants. That roundtable is more remembered for Siddhant's droll comment towards Ananya Pandey. It certainly proves that the younger generation is completely clueless about the history of Hindi cinema and especially legendary actresses and the memorable roles they played. Their education begins with Kajol in DDLJ. Older generation insiders like Ranbir Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Fara Khan and Karan Johar have seen films going back decades and can speak authoritatively about it, (whatever be their other faults).
Thanks for reminding me of that..
We also need to add Sarah Ali Khan to the list... In all her interviews pre-Kedarnath days, the actress was pretty much heart-eyed talking about Kareena and Pooh in general..

Poo is the epitome of escapism fantasy. There are lots of other characters who have tried to do the same but didn't even come close.
Hell, even KJo tried to recreate the same character in SOTY 1 with the entire Gulabi Aankhein rehash.
Performance wise, yes Kareena has done better roles, but Poo is one character who either (rich) girls relate to or who girls want to be.
We've seen many such scenes in Hollywood films where the heroine's closet and life is a dream, but in Bollywood the only one that'll come to your mind immediately is Poo.
This entire sequence itself proves why:
How Alia never managed to recreate the same energy in SOTY (despite trying so hard) is proof imo that Kareena isn't actually as bad an actor as some make her out to be...

Kareena was a good fit for the role of Poo.... unlike Alia, who was a complete miscast as the prettiest, coolest, or was it the hottest? girl in school. 😆 Literally looked like a parody of brand obsessed rich kids .... except it was an actual character in an actual movie. 😆
Poo became famous because of memes.
Calling her the benchmark for Indian actresses is like calling all Akshay movies as the benchmark for Indian cinema.
Only on this duniya se nirala forum will you read such things

The point is, people are still talking about it. In contrast, how many Geet memes have you seen?
Negative popularity is still popularity. People may mock the character, make fun of it, but it's still popular enough for people to remember it (or new generation to get to know it despite the film being 2 decades old).
Kareena's acting in Chameli / Dev / Omkara were better but you do not see much hoopla around them. No one's calling it a benchmark for acting. But it sure as hell is very iconic.
I have seen Geet memes. Especially 'main Apni favorite hu' line one.
Geet is easily the most popular character of Kareena's life and is popular in a positive way and not as a caricature or joke unlike Poo.
IDK how can negative popularity be called iconic...
I mean is it appropriate to call Bobby Deol iconic due to Lord Bobby memes now? Or call Mithun's vulgar film Gunda iconic due to its online popularity especially among men?
The word iconic seems to have more positive connotation. IDK if it is appropriate to call meme or caricature material as iconic.
To each his own. I was more concerned about semantics in using a word like 'iconic'.
If what younger starlets say is being taken as criteria then let us be honest that it is likely that they did not bother watching Dev, Omkara, Chameli or perhaps had no understanding to grasp depths of those characters. It is unlikely for kids to watch these films or make sense of them.
These are all small banner films and so was JWM.
Just because more kids watched K3G while growing up and probably found the silly character funny, does it make it iconic? K3G airs more on TV as it a Dharma multi starrer, compared to say, JWM. Something shown again and again is likely to be seen more or be more popular.
I actually loved Aamir's Dil as a kid and liked the scenes of banter and fights with his dad in that film and played its songs all day. I remember Aamir's fake knife in Ishq was also funny and actually such toy knives began to sell in market back then and kids did that fake stabbing prank 'teechu teechu' like Aamir's character in that film.
But those films and acts are iconic? Not really.
IDK if something even so so or ordinary can be called iconic just because people joke about it or find it fun.
If memes or people talking later about it are benchmark then Lord Bobby and Gunda are also iconic. Gunda was rated highly on IMDb too, which is a joke given how vulgar it is. It is a film most young men of 80s and 90s saw secretly in college. It has many memes and innuendo inspired by it till date. Is it iconic?
The better word would be cult perhaps.
Kids like simple and lowest common denominator stuff. You do not expect a kid or teen to name Chameli as his fav performance or film. Just as most kids name Kareena/Kajol/Rani/Ash/Preity and not Tabu as their fav actress either.
Kids cannot process complex emotions and nuances. So they are not grown enough to appreciate Geet even. But it is easier to remember a shallow, non serious character like Poo.
I think ones who are already rich, relate to Poo as they see themselves in her. And ones who are broke probably got fascinated seeing her closet and attitude.
I remember Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai had become really popular as it was a fun family film with great songs and Kareena looked great in it. But her character is probably talked of less now as it was more focused on studies, and was not shallow the way Poo was.
Seeing Poo as an inspiration in either acting or lifestyle sense says more about people who seek such inspiration than any merit in the character itself.
Or probably people like Poo as she is the only shallow glam doll and hence light hearted character in an otherwise high drama film like K3G.
Anyway if the word iconic is used so casually these days then Tuffy in HAHK, kabootar in MPK, Dhanno in Sholay and the dog in Teri Meherbaaniyan are iconic. Stories of those films can't move ahead without these superstar performers. Salute their trainers and their ability to perform as per scripts despite being birds and animals.
