|| Your Wish, My Command ||
The cell phone vibrated making Anupama awake. She reached for it, holding the bright screen to her face, she set it for 15 minutes later. They were on a holiday and she didn’t want her husband’s sleep to get disturbed.
She-didn't-remember-how-many minutes later, she opened her eyes to see the scenery outside the window. The field was murky, brown grass sticking up out of a swamp of fog. The trees were not trees but only pine. The oak and poplars had withered down to stalks, leaving the shaggy pine looking like remnants of a holocaust. But in this fog, the trees never ended; they float upwards, for all she knew, limitless. She closed her eyes, trying to paint the scenery in her mind.
She suddenly felt a hand caressing her hair. She opened her eyes to look at the most handsome face she had ever seen.
"Good morning, Sunshine!" He said with his infectious smile. Every time he wore that, she fell for him harder.
“Good morning,” she said as she sighed.
“Slept well?” he asked still playing with her hair.
She nodded and he offered her the cup he had kept aside.
"You know I drink tea," she said noticing the coffee mug.
“It’s tea, I didn’t realize I don’t have tea cups here.” He frowned.
“That’s fine, you made it that’s enough,” she said as she sat up.
He just smiled and covered his legs with the duvet she was covered with and sat beside her.
“Two months of marriage and finally our first day together, alone. Yesterday was all about travelling and tiredness,” he said and they sipped tea. “But we could have gone anywhere, why did you choose this old farmhouse in Ooty?”
“Because it’s yours,” she said as she looked around the room. “And there is no need to waste money just for travelling, we have such a beautiful place here. You have to take me to every place you own.”
“Your wish, my command.”
She smiled and got back to her tea.
“Anupamaa, would you mind repeating what you had done last night while you thought I was supposedly asleep?”
Her heart skipped a beat. For the first time since their marriage, she had kissed his forehead when she thought he was asleep yesternight.
She looked at him and saw a mischievous smile on his face.
“I so want to smash your face just to remove that smirk!”
“Your wish, my command!” he said as he smiled again.
“Anuj!” she pouted.
“Anupama!” he said mimicking her.
“You don’t need to do whatever I want.”
“As I always say, fulfilling every wish of yours, is my favorite thing to do.”
Anupama removed the hair falling her his forehead and kept her lips there, pressing them softly. They stayed like that for a moment and then she put her head on his shoulder, hugging him. She could feel Anuj sigh as he held her tightly in his embrace.
She had been under so many misconceptions; She had conveniently assumed so many things over the past. But finally, she realized that all along she was living in a world she had made for herself, not in reality. She had realized reality was what she had always been running away from, what she had not cared to see. She had respected Anuj’s love for her, but she never accepted his love. But soon she realized that you don’t need a partner only for physical needs, but love is beyond everything. Anuj’s undying, undemanding and true love taught her that love do happen twice!
