My point is that Dev is being blamed for the toxicity of his sister and mother. You can rightfully blame him for not standing up for Sona earlier, but things are slowing starting to look better.

But the particular comment which deemed dev toxic just because his mother and sister are makes no effing sense

See dev was always toxic. If you see from s1, he made sona suffer. He made her loosing job n forced her to work for him. When they fell in love he didn't take min to throw her out. And stalking her n creating drama at her engagement. Even after marriage he threw her out but he blamed her for leaving him. And now in s3, dev becom intolerable. He is not just insensitive towards sona but insensitive towards his children too. He is not standing for sona but also not allowing sona to stand for right. If you don't call him toxic, what else you call it.

Ppl don't blame his mother or sister, ppl are blaming dev bcoz of his week personality. And just bcoz in this track, after sona drunk scene, dev taking care sona, does not mean he will stand for her. We hv to wait n see character development.

Interesting povs here. I always wanted to read more about Dev. This is my first season actually with no history of watching any of the actor's previous works except for Supriya Pilgaonkar.

Dev as a husband is an utter failure in this season at least. He had shown downright douche qualities during Ayush track. It was not just about siding with his mom but criticising his wife for visiting her father, for sharing her problems with someone else when he didn't bother to listen to her in the first place or for calling her incompetent when she took a stand for her son. I think this character is lucky coz the TRPs ain't that great else he would be one of those today's MLs who are being bashed on SNS for their behaviour.

Yes...he is trying now. Credits due. But it all comes down to the fact that he doesn't act till he is pointed to act a certain way. He at least works upon his mistakes unlike some of the present MLs on ITV. Though I think this character is nothing to write home about.

Dev has always been a failure of a husband, but as a character he is definitely something to write home about.

There is such beauty in an inherently flawed character, that may not be good, but tries every day. If there's one word to describe him, it would be loyal. Dev goes above and beyond for the people he loves, forever living in guilt for not being able to match up to their expectations- no matter how much he does.

In season-1 just after their wedding, Dev consistently speaks for and supports Sonakshi in her every decision, even when those decisions have dire consequences (like Neha's and Ranveer's divorce). However, each time he speaks in Sonakshi's favour, Ishwari grows a little more insecure and her manipulation is almost programmed. Right before Dev and Sonakshi are about to leave for their honeymoon to France, Ishwari faints, and in her room talks to him about how he's forgetting his responsibilities, his duties towards his family, and is leaving Neha in a delicate situation to go away with his wife for two weeks. Shaheer's acting in that scene is some of the best I've seen on ITV, Dev is guilty about even having thought of a vacation, even more guilty about disappointing Sonakshi by not going, upset about the cancellation of a trip that he himself has been looking forward to. It's heartbreaking- He wants to fight it, but he physically can't. All Dev has known is unquestioning responsibility towards his mother and his sisters. Sonakshi was the only thing he wanted for himself, falling in love with her freed him in a way. She became the wind beneath his wings, his sounding board, the rational voice of judgement behind his every decision, his respite and a shoulder to share every responsibility.

Dev knows how Sonakshi is treated in that house, he's said it in many of his drunk taunts at Ishwari. He senses Sona's discomfort. but doesn't actively acknowledge it since that would lead to a conversation. He can't say anything against his mother, but he physically cannot handle Sonakshi's disappointment in him. Dev lives in fear of something big going down, so he chooses to diffuse the smaller situations, just to keep everyone happy.

He has always said that Sonakshi is much stronger than him, so much so that I think he believes that she can and will handle every situation- that she's the one he can go to for support. Dev doesn't have it in him to support her, no matter how much he wants to and I feel like he knows that, and it adds to the guilt that eats him up inside.

It's more pity than hatred that I feel towards this character, he's not the worst husband, he's just trying to be the perfect son.

Again...all these qualities might have been rare when the first season was aired. But these days there are many such characters being written in the guise of being called flaw. Almost villainous if they were not the male leads. Though the difference with them is there gradually an improvement in their behaviour is shown. Redemption, criticism and lesson learnt...all these are the traits I associate with a flawed character. If these three are not shown then that character clearly inclines more towards someone who is not protagonist.

I believe this character if it is popular then it is only among the show fans or the actor's fans. When this show was on air during the first season...I heard some really jokes on the maa beta duo in BWF. That was reason enough to not watch it. But even 3 seasons later the maa beta duo are in the same place except it doesn't seem to have enough range to get neutral people or old fans for engagement on the show. This happens when characters are shown in the same light forever... people get tired of watching the same thing and again. That's why I said it isn't something to write home about... neither the character nor the acting done.

I think pity is what Sonakshi feels for him too (if not more than love)...after that pill popping incident she tells her father that he doesn't have anyone to talk to. She was his only friend.

Flawed is ok. And ppl sympathised for his situation too. But such character will never improve? How long audience can sympathise if he cannot stand for his wife and wife will b treated as thrash. This is no more interesting n it's started boring.

I think what you said applies primarily to Dev in S3 because the writing neither has head or tail and Dev is insipid on most days & even insensitive & passive. But Dev in S1 was really well written. Flawed yes, bad husband yes but as a fictional character, he was definitely interesting to watch. In most other shows on TV, the male lead doesn't even have a POV. And most of the conflicts between the lead pair is because of external factors. That is due to planning and plotting by vamps & the leads misunderstanding each other because of that or separating because of some ridiculous reason. But with Kuch Rang, most conflicts were internal. Dev still cannot be compared with most other male leads on Indian TV because his actions had context and explanation. Kuch Rang never had a unique storyline but what set it apart and why it became such a big hit was because of the treatment and execution. In every other show, if there is a break up, you see the female lead agreeing for another marriage & the third angle turns out to be a psycho & the leads unite after the third angle is exposed. Kuch Rang took the same story but made the third angle a really mature & understanding guy. And in the same track, they made Dev lose his sanity. And not once did they use Ritvik to glorify Dev. Same way, even when Dev was supposed to be engaged to Natasha, not once did Natasha put down Sonakshi. And Sonakshi herself was jealous but never let go of her dignity and self respect. In fact when Dev realized his love for Sonakshi, he went and spoke to Natasha first about it even before confessing to Sona because he felt she deserved to know. And Natasha on her part moved on immediately without behaving like an idiot

The biggest difference I see between Kuch Rang and other shows is the writing. This saas-bahu conflict, male lead being blind in his family's love, having third angles etc have been concepts used in shows from early 2000. But it's the way KRP wrote it which made it different. Dev was never the hero. He was flawed & problematic. Sona wasn't a mahaan female lead. She called out Dev & Ishwari even when she was married and in love with Dev. Ishwari wasn't a one dimensional vamp either, who resorted to stupid planning and plotting to separate them. Whatever happened was a result of their own internal flaws. The first break up happened because Dev is impulsive and looks for short term solutions without thinking about the consequences. Ishwari also did not overdose on pills on purpose. She was actually disappointed in herself that she couldn't bring herself to be happy for Dev. Similarly, second separation happened because they married without resolving any of the conflicts. The base was a misunderstanding created by Vicky but the reason it happened was because Sonakshi thought Dev was capable of doing it thanks to the Neha- Ranveer track. Add to this the prenup & loan issue and it was bound to collapse.

Even post leap, Dev and Sona are very clear about not marrying other ppl even when they supposedly hated each other. The beauty of Kuch Rang was that it never needed a third angle or psycho level planning plotting to create conflicts. It was always about characters messing up esp Dev. Which is what made it so fascinating

P.S. Forgive me for the essay 🙈 I just think Durjoy Dutta did a great job in S1 esp the first 150 odd episodes. And you can't really compare it to most other ITV shows IMO:)

Yes. All my observations apply to the character I see now. I haven't watched the previous seasons hence I'm not even judging how it was.

Whatever comments you'll see from me will be wrt to the current season only.

And that is how I see the character of Dev...who is not much different from the other ITV male leads.

The current one is worse than other ITV male leads also because of how passive and non reactive he is 😂 You really should watch S1 because if you are able to tolerate this one, you will love S1 :)

The reason I'm able to tolerate this one is because I don't have any attachment to the characters prior to this season.

The reason many are not able to stomach the changes is because of deep rooted attachment.

I will watch it after this season is over :)
