Chapter 15

Sorry once again for such late comments

Fantastic Chapter

Geet has been disappointed by the fact that Maan did not remember

what he said to her or called her

somehow I cannot believe that someone like him cannot remember

what has been said in his drunken state

probably he wants to play it cool and slowly with Geet

he seems to get more involved these days with Neil as Geet and Maan takes him out

so Monty Neils's father and Maan are not close ye Monty allows his son

with Maan

perhaps Monty just don't care

Sameera she is slowly becoming a sore sight

Chapter 16

Amazingly Awesome

Oh I loved the gesture , Geet taking Neil to meet his mother

and the sad part is that Asha was never in the wrong

Monty really did wrong to separate Neil and Asha

surprisingly Maan was not angry with Geet just he wants to know where both Geet and Neil is

and I think that is fair because at any time Geet could be in danger

wow Maan is actually falling for Geet

and he tells her his Engagement to Sameera is broken because someone else walked into

his life

I'm hoping that both Maan and Geet can discuss the reason for her eviction from the shelter

but yes he already knows that Geet has a kind heart

its going to be interesting to see how Maan confesses

and how their relation will carry on

as Geet already cares she just made it clear to him that he is alone

Chapter 17

Even though Maan had asked her to stay put, Geet waited only a few moments before scurrying after him. She knew that Maan handled dangerous situations on his own all the time, but she still felt compelled to follow him. Was it Sameera’s father, ready to take revenge? Was it otherwise gang-related? Or was it something else entirely?

By the time Geet reached the hallway to the foyer, the banging had stopped and a balding man with a large paunch was arguing with Maan by the front door. Even without an introduction, Geet knew immediately that he was Neil’s father, Monty.

“Neil let it slip that his babysitter took him to see Asha!” Monty bellowed. “The babysitter who lives *here*! How could you let this happen under your own roof?”

“Calm down,” Maan snapped. “How can you be the one who is so upset after you’ve treated Asha the way you have?”

“My domestic life is none of your concern.” Monty stomped his foot cartoonishly, and Geet almost thought smoke would start coming out of his ears. “If I hadn’t been married to that pathetic woman, I would’ve been able to take over for our father!”

Geet let this sink in. Was Monty really saying that he had wanted to head the gang instead of Maan? Maan, for his part, looked dumbfounded.

Monty began, “I let Neil come over to toughen the boy up --”

“Is that right? Or is it just to get him out of your way for a few hours?” Maan interrupted.

Ignoring the question, Monty suddenly shifted so that Geet was directly in his vision. “Is that the idiot babysitter who took Neil to see Asha?” he said angrily. Geet automatically took a step back out of fright.

In the blink of an eye, Maan, who was a few inches taller than Monty, stepped in front of his brother. “Don’t you dare insult her,” Maan hissed. “You should be thanking Geet for watching Neil every day after school. She’s currently the most loving person in *your* son’s life, since you refuse to let Neil see his own mother.”

Monty narrowed his beady eyes at Geet, then turned back to Maan. “Why are you defending her? Who is she to you? How dare *you* take the moral high ground with me when you have some girl living here even though you and Sameera --”

“Sameera and I are over,” Maan said through gritted teeth.

Letting out a hollow laugh, Monty shook his head. “I see. Well, that was a foolish mistake, brother. You and I know very well how dangerous Sameera’s father can be.” He shifted again and pointed a finger at Geet. “You. Don’t you ever take my son back to Asha’s house. Have I made myself clear, or are you too stupid to --”

Before Monty could finish, Maan shoved him in the chest. Geet gasped, her hands flying up to her mouth as Monty stumbled backward.

Maan looked angrier than Geet had ever seen him. “I told you not to insult her,” he said, his jaw clenched. “You’re lucky I’m being so gentle. Now, get out of my house. *Brother.*”

Monty sneered at them both, but Maan’s shove had apparently robbed his words. He let himself out the front door, slamming it loudly behind him.

Geet watched Maan curl and uncurl his fists by his sides. When he turned around, his face softened when he saw her hovering nervously in the hallway. “Are you okay?” He approached her and put a hand on her shoulder.

“I -- I think so,” she croaked out.

Maan grimaced. “I had no idea Monty wanted to take over for our father.”

“And it looks like Monty has been punishing Asha for it,” murmured Geet.

“Well, Monty *should* have taken over, as far as I’m concerned,” Maan continued, shaking his head from disbelief. “I never wanted this. And I was asleep at the wheel when it came to Neil. I knew Monty was tough with him, but I just assumed . . . I don’t know. I never thought much about it. It's only when you arrived that I really started paying attention.”

“I’m sorry," said Geet regretfully. "I never meant to cause a rift between you and your brother.”

“We were never close,” said Maan, waving his hand. “You didn’t do anything wrong, sweetheart. *He* is the one who shouldn’t have been so disrespectful to you. Come to the kitchen. I’ll ask the chef to make you some tea.”

Geet waited a beat before following Maan down the hall. Who was this man that Maan was turning into? He couldn’t stand her before, and now he was defending her over his own blood? Calling her terms of endearment, making sure she had a cup of tea to soothe her nerves? Monty’s question rang in her ears: Who *was* she to Maan?

---

The next few weeks passed by at warp-speed for Geet.

Without discussing it with her first, Maan moved Geet into a newer, more luxurious room, which had its own mini-library and chaise longue set in front of a bay window.

Monty continued to send Neil over after school, much to Geet’s relief. She couldn't help being confused, however -- Monty had been so angry when chastising her, but he was still leaving Neil in her care? He must have truly wanted to get away from his own son, which saddened Geet. Neil asked Geet several times when he would get to see Asha again, but Geet didn’t want to risk Monty’s wrath again so soon. She tried to distract Neil by holding play dates for him and Iqbal, but could tell Neil missed his mother dearly.

On the work front, Geet had applied for several jobs, one of which was for a secretary position at a non-profit organization that provided free legal representation for women who couldn’t afford it. After what she had seen Neil’s mother go through, Geet was determined to help women like Asha in any way she could, even if she had to start in a clerical role. She had had two call-back interviews and was hoping for a definitive job offer soon. She didn't tell Maan about it, and tried not to think about what a conflict of interest it might be that she was so closely associated with someone who clearly didn't care about the law.

But the aspect of Geet's life that took up most of her thoughts was her developing relationship with Maan. Each day their relationship seemed to inch toward a closer union. One day she overheard Maan cancel several meetings. He then told her that his morning had “unexpectedly freed up,” and would she like to take a walk with him around the grounds? Geet had shivered in the autumn chill, and Maan had placed an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. Geet had never felt so safe or protected as she and a gangster strolled around the tennis court.

Maan also never missed a meal with Geet. He would get annoyed at the chef when Geet wouldn’t finish all of her food, as if the chef had prepared the meal poorly when in fact Geet had just grown full. Geet began eating every bite in order to spare Maan’s staff. Maan gave her more detail about his life growing up; apparently Monty had always been a bully, which is why the brothers had never gotten along.

Maan never questioned Geet about her own past, and she didn’t offer any information on her own. Frankly, after everything Geet had gone through, she wanted to forget it all. Sometimes Geet caught Maan looking at her, lost in thought, and she wondered if he wanted to ask questions about the supposed “wrongdoing” in her background check. He never did.

Surprisingly, they didn’t hear a peep from Sameera or her father, but their potential revenge was never far from Geet’s thoughts and amped up her anxiety. Were Sameera and her father just biding their time?

Finally, one night over dinner, Geet couldn’t help but bring it up to Maan. “Have you, um, heard anything about Sameera and how her family is taking the news of the broken engagement?” she asked.

“No.” Maan shrugged easily.

“Aren’t you even a little worried about how her father will react? It’s been a few weeks now -- surely, they won’t let this slight go so easily?”

Maan took his time chewing before he responded. “What was the alternative, Geet? Stay with Sameera even when . . . .” He scooted his chair back, then patted his thigh. Geet hesitated, then sat herself in his lap. They had never been *this* close before, and Geet felt herself near trembling.

“Don’t be scared,” Maan whispered in her ear. “You know that I will never let anyone hurt you, right?”

“It’s not me I’m worried about,” Geet said, although the sensation of Maan’s strong muscles cradling her were making her forget pretty much everything, including how to worry.

Maan tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, then sighed into her neck. “Geet, you coming into my life has been like . . . like my entire life was winter, and now spring has arrived. Can’t we just enjoy this?”

Geet bit her lip as Maan kissed her forehead gently. “I’ve arranged for a boat trip tomorrow. Just the two of us. It’s time we had a proper . . . date. And Geet, I forbid you to worry. Understand?” His tone was serious, but he was stroking her back.

It was a tall order for Geet, who felt like she had spent her entire existence worrying about food, shelter, and making her way through the world. She thought about all the loss she had suffered as a child and how she had gone through life keeping everyone at bay in order to shield herself from more abandonment, more pain.

How much could Geet really trust Maan? Maan, who, despite his newfound gentleness with her, still led a criminal enterprise? How could Geet forget the blood pooling around that man in the alley? What if Maan’s gang activity hurt Geet in the end? Or what if Maan, who was extraordinarily wealthy and handsome, grew tired of her? What if --

“I thought I told you not to worry,” Maan said, as if reading her thoughts. “Everything will be okay, Geet. Trust me.”

Thanks for reading! Hope you have a great day. :)

Nice update. Where is all this going to lead. Geet confused and worried whether to trust Maan with his changed behavior.

No love lost between the brothers.

Monty seems to be pissed off with Geet. Thankfully he didn't stop Neil from meeting Geet.

Feel sad for him.

Loved the way Maan addresses Geet. His whole demeanor changes around her.

He is falling hard and fast.

Can understand Geet's dilemma.

She feels safe with him but Can she have a future with him.

Have to wait and see.

Waiting for next 😁
