Idk. Maybe they invested or have a financial planner investing. They do own another property in Mumbai. Maybe they had rental income coming from it until now (that the building is being demolished). And later will likely go to KD if KDice ship is sailing in that direction and stays strong where in couple of years, they don't mind tying a knot.
On a diff note, from Kanwar's earlier interviews, he seems/seemed blessed to just have a job in this year's lockdown even if it meant he'd be away from his family. So maybe they struggled some last year. Especially since JD had a gap from March- July in his employment. I know marketing was a function where lot of companies decided to cut cost and have reduction in forces along with obvious budget cuts in T&E expenses, and JD may have experienced some set back. And this is me purely giving him benefit of the doubt that Perfumania was his side gig when he got the next job, so the family doesn't have to be in that condition if a situation like that arises again. Because even with rental income of that other property, if the tenants couldn't pay the rent, not sure what they could do. Don't know restrictions in India, but here, evictions were banned.
