Pandya Store—21:20, February 26, 2019

There were thousands of books that I could have picked out that day. Thousands of happy, peppy romances where the main characters drowned in happy and fluffy love. But out of all the books I could have chosen...I chose the one book that made my skin crawl with frustration.

Shiva slowly picked up the book, observing the corners, the binding... everything. Slowly, he flipped to the first page of the book.

Mera Dev was what the book was called. It described the romance between a poor Gujarati boy named Dev Pandya and a rich Gujarati girl named Rishita Seth. Dev was a silent and compliant boy while Rishita was a firecracker through and through. Though Rishita's family disapproved of the match, she managed to marry into the Pandya family...

He glanced up at her with a frown, but she remained rooted to the ground.

The first time I read the book, I dropped it midway. I hated everything about the book, all the characters. Rishita was too ambitious, Dev was too quiet... The rest of the characters were too trivial... but then something strange was happening... the things that were happened in the novel started to happen in reality... Rishita Seth sat next to her in class... asked for a pen... and ignored her for the rest of the class... just like in the book. And then the cafeteria scene... Rishita had bumped into her and spilled aloo gobi sabzi all over her shirt... and the turmeric stain stayed in her shirt even after washing it... just like the novel.

"So," he stood up a little straighter. "If I'm understanding correctly, you," he pointed to her, "have a book," he glanced down as his fingers moved across the blank page, "that can predict the future," he slowly muttered.

Once those strange occurrences started happening, I finished the entire book finding out that Rishita married Dev Pandya... at the expense of Raavi Narayan's death... of my death. I was not a main character or even a side character... I was a mere prop...

He flipped through the rest of the book... somehow, all the pages were blank. But to her, it was very different... each and every page contained details that explained the circumstances that would lead to her death and how not a single character was there to save her.

The novel described me as a sweet and compassionate girl... someone who was too nice for my own good... and I died. All so the protagonists could have their dream wedding...

"And... Pandya Store would become affected... if she marries into the family...," he closed the book as he frowned.

They were enemies from their childhood. Never agreeing on anything...

There's nothing in this world that means more to me than my own life... if being sweet and compassionate caused me to die... then I'll become a villainess. I'll stop Dev Pandya and Rishita from getting married, from falling in love... from meeting each other... and I will do whatever it takes!

Shiva glanced up at her, his eyes were dark and stormy. Slowly walking over to her, he handed the book, "I would never partner with you for any reason," his eyes dropped to the book and for a second, she saw a flicker of anger flash through his eyes. "But if there is any risk to the store...," he let out a slow sigh and then held out his hand, "Tell me what to do," his words were steely as her lips curled upward. "And I'll do it."

My name is Raavi Narayan, and I will do everything in my power to change my fate!

Even if it means partnering with my childhood enemy...

In the grand ballroom, underneath the chandelier, Dev and Rishita will meet each other, becoming interested in one another. As they dance throughout the night, they discuss their likes, dislikes, hobbies, and the sort, and they find out that they have many similarities... by the end of the night, they grow interested in each other... the beginnings of their love story.

Raavi's fingers lingered over the words beginnings of their love story. She glanced up at Shiva who was busy speaking to the electrician he hired. When he turned to her, she raised her brow. Shiva closed his eyes and nodded his head in assurance as she relaxed in her seat.

Last night, she and Shiva sat side by side as they brainstormed ideas. Though he couldn't read the novel, she summarized what would happed as best she could, and afterwards, they both came up with plans, building off each other's ideas.

Rishita and Dev fall in love under the warm chandelier lights... the warm glow highlighted Rishita's simple beauty and Dev's handsomeness, accelerating their feelings of love.

She brought up the idea of somehow removing the lights... and he was the one to speak about the electrician shutting off the power supply. He said they should be at the party, just so they can come in between Dev and Rishita, and she was the one who went shopping for costumes and coordinated on how they would be able to sneak in. Then they spoke about the possibility of needing to dance if they were at the party... she had no problem with dancing, but he wasn't confident in his own dancing skills.

So she spent the next two hours teaching him the basics of a slow dance.

He struggled. Hard. But... it was unusual and different. In those two hours, their fights were a little different. Instead of pushing her away, he pulled her towards him, demanding she do a better job at teaching him. Instead of ignoring their physical proximity, the tips of his ears were red throughout the night... Just as she laid ownership on his body by squeezing his bicep whenever he missed a step, he would gently squeeze her hip whenever she couldn't match up to his speed.

He still wasn't a better dancer, and she still wasn't a better teacher. But today, they were in a better place than yesterday. Today, they had a plan. A plan that Rishita and Dev would not be able to ruin.

"Raavi," Shiva muttered. She glanced up. For the first time, he was not dressed in his usual vests or cargo pants. He didn't have any streaks of dirt on his cheeks. He was handsome... but he wasn't the Shiva she was comfortable with... the one who smelled like Pandya Store. He kneeled down, "Your heels...," he was about to touch her the pointed ends of her heels, but Raavi pulled her feet away.

They had discussed her not wearing flats, in case they had to run, but when she saw the blush pink heels, she just had to wear them. She glanced away from Shiva, "I'll be fine," she muttered. As he stood, she motioned towards the back entrance, where staff entered and exited.

"Everything is all set," Shiva murmured as they walked through the long winding hall. Raavi nodded her head absentmindedly. "The electrician will cut the power supply at the first song. This should give us more than enough time to separate Dev and Rishita into two different corners of the room so they don't meet."

Raavi nodded head head as she thought back to the novel. She tried to fill Shiva in on as many details as she could, but she still didn't tell him the ending... instead lying about how Rishita would bring "ruin" on the store. If Shiva knew that the reason she was doing this was to prevent her death... he wouldn't have bothered to help her... the novel predicted as such.

She glanced at him nervously. After spending a considerable portion of the night together, she wondered if Shiva thought differently of her... if he would want to continue their mission just to save her... because right now he cared more about the store...

"Raavi," Shiva snapped his fingers in front of her face. Raavi glanced at him as his gaze shifted to his brother, "Go... I'll find Rishita."

Raavi nodded as she walked to Dev... she would do this! She would change her fate!

After taking only 4 steps, the room became dark, filled with quiet murmurs of shock. Shiva glanced up at the chandeliers and noticed a faint afterglow... He quickly pulled out his phone, not noticing there was only 2% charging left on the device, and saw the electrician's text.

Electrician: Bad.. bad... news! I just saw Janardhan and Kamini walk around the area! Since I didn't want to be arrested, I just switched off the power.... good luck!

Shiva shook his head in disbelief. The plan was for him to go to Rishita, and spend the rest of the night by her side. Effectively blocking her from meeting Dev, whether he had to actually speak with her or whether he had to pour juice on her like he did for Raavi. Just when he thought the plan was moving along smoothly, the power shut off... a little too early.

He pulled up Raavi's contact information, ready to text her about a potential backup plan. However, his phone died... his eyes widened... No power... dead phone... what next?

He glanced up at the ceiling once again. He needed to make another plan.

Think Shiva... think... how do I make sure Rishita and Dev do not meet for the rest of the night? How do I make sure Pandya Store is safe?

Lost in his thoughts, he didn't even notice the girl that was limping over to him. She almost knocked him off balance, but he caught her last minute. A light scent of floral wafted up to him... Raavi? His grip on her waist tightened now that he knew who she was. Pulling her up, he couldn't help but clench his fists with nervousness when she fell into his body.

"S-sorry!" she whispered.

"No need," he mentioned gruffly without meaning to. In the dark, he became hyperaware of her touch, smell... breath. It was easy to ignore her normally... but now...

Raavi's hands moved up his biceps, gently tickling him in the process, "Do you have any ideas?"

"The lights need to turn on first," he mumbled. She placed too much of her weight onto him. He glanced down, "W-what happened," the baritone of his voice was low and rumbling.

Raavi's grip tightened as she glanced up at him, "Blisters...heels," she said the last word so softly, probably to make sure he didn't hear it, lest he yell at her.

"Can you walk," he whispered softly. As much as he wanted to reprimand her, he partially knew how painful blisters could be... he saw his bhabi struggle in pain, after all.

"N-not really," she whispered as he sighed. After a moment's of silence, she whispered another apology.

"You don't need to say," the lights turned back on again and the first thing Shiva became aware of were Raavi's large doe-like eyes staring up at him. He swallowed as he felt his hands slightly tremble... they were much more brown than he remembered... she was much more closer that he remembered as well.

"You don't need to say?" her eyes widened slightly as she moved a little closer to him.

Swallowing, he whispered, "Sorry..." he glanced away. "W-we're... friends now aren't we?"

"F-friends?!" Raavi perked up a little with happiness as Shiva wondered whether that was the appropriate relationship they shared... they only spent the night together... planning and plotting.

Is that... enough for friendship? His fist clenched and unclenched. He didn't know why... but being friends with Raavi bothered him... more than being enemies with Raavi.

"S-Shiva!" Raavi tugged on his sleeve.

He frowned, following her gaze... and for a moment, his mouth nearly dropped.

There at the center of the stage were Dev and Rishita, Dev holding onto Rishita as they both stared at each other in wonder.

No no no. This is the beginning of the end. This meeting will culminate in my death.

The thought sent shivers down her spine. She didn't want to die for Dev Rishita to have their epic love story. She didn't realise she had clutched Shiva tighter as she thought about her death.

No no no. This will culminate with closing down of Pandya store. I can't let that happen.

Shiva's wild thoughts were broken when he felt Raavi clutching onto him as if for dear life. As he turned to reprimand her, he saw the look of utter desperation in her face. Concern bloomed in his chest as he pulled closer by her waist.

Raavi looked up at him. Her eyes were so captivating.

Focus Shiva. Focus.

Why was she so afraid? For the store? No she isn't as attached to the store as he is. Why?

But before he could ask anything, Raavi spoke up.

"Shiva they met under the warm light of chandelier. Now they will talk throughout the night. Shiva they will fall in love. Shiva this is the beginning of the end. Shivaa.."

With each word, she was panicking more. And finally Shiva place his finger on her lips. The contact gave a jolt to both of them yet they didn't move away.

"Ayy Chipkali calm down. Look at me. True. We could not prevent their meeting but we will not let them enjoy either. "

The confidence with which he enunciated the words soothed Raavi and just like that she believed that things would be alright again. She gave a bright smile to which Shiva rolled his eyes exasperated though there was a slight smile on his face too.

And then Raavi saw the waiter holding glasses of cold drink. Yes of course. This will do. She almost ran to the waiter forgetting her blister. Raavi yelped in pain at the first step.

Shiva's hold which had loosened while they were chatting tightened again.

"What do you think you are doing? Idiot. "

Raavis arms were around his neck. Her eyes closed in pain, she said in a small voice that if they could throw the cold drink on both of their dresses, Dev and Rishita would have to separate for the night.

Shiva looked at the cold drink and then at Raavi. He lifted her up bridal style making her gasp. He made her comfortable on a seat nearby.

"Don't you dare move. I will handle them then I will come to you."

And Shiva marched off.

"Dev. Dev. See your favorite cold drink. And who is this girl you are dancing away with? "

And before either Dev or Rishita could reply, Shiva tripped at the leg at a nearby table.

"Ahhhhh. My new dress. Can't you see where you are going?"

"Sorry from his side. "

"Now I have to wash it else the stain will remain. Will your sorry be a detergent? Ughhhh"

And Rishita stomped off.

Shiva passed an apologetic look to Dev to which Dev nodded sadly. Shiva turned to Raavi with a victorious smirk while she showed him a thumbs up. And as Shiva saw Dev walking away to the other side, he took two glasses of cold drink. He gave one to Raavi as he settled next to her and he himself took the other.

"Cheers to our first victory. " Their glasses clinked

While Shiva and Raavi were celebrating their first win, they didn’t see Dev following Rishita. Dev saw Rishita enter the ladies room and he waited outside, so he could apologize to her for his brothers stupid mistake. He thought back at the moment when the power went off.

He was standing still in the ballroom when he suddenly felt someone bump in to him. His hands immediately got hold of that someone’s arm and he pulled that person closer to help steady that person. He felt a female body pressed against his own body. He smelled the fragrance of flowers surrounding her and he couldn’t help it and he inhaled that fragrance once more. ‘’Her body fitted perfectly in his arms’’, he thought. Just as quickly as the light went out, it turned on again. He looked at a beautiful face. Her eyes were formed in an almond shape, they had the colour of roasted hazelnuts. She has a small but very cute nose. Her lips were perfectly forms, her underlip slightly fuller. They were very kissable. ‘’control yourself’’, he thought. He let her arm loose and introduced himself. She told him that her name was Rishita. And then his stupid brother appeared and spilled his drink over her.

Rishita left the ladies room and saw Dev waiting there. She smiled at him. ‘’He looked so dashing in his tuxedo’’, she thought. Before she could say anything,he apologized for his brothers mistake. She told him not to worry it was a mistake and she shouldn’t have reacted that way. She saw a smile appear on his face, it took her breath away. She felt some tingling feeling through her body and she couldn’t suppress her smile. ‘’Do you want to go on a date with me’’,he asked her. She nodded her head, ‘’yes I would love to go on a date with you Dev’’, she said with a big smile. They exchange phone numbers and he would call her about the date. She told that she had to leave, cause her parents were waiting outside. They said there goodbyes and she left. Dev was happy, he met a beautiful woman and he would go on a date with her.

In the ballroom Raavi took the book out of her purse, to see if there were any changes in the story.

The first time they met they were mesmerized by each other. But the next time they meet the first roots of love will be formed.

The first time they met they were mesmerized by each other. But the next time they meet the first roots of love will be formed.

Rishita and Dev will message to each other in the depths of nights, the place where they would meet next. They will decide where they want to begin a love story that would be remembered as the epic love story of Somnath...

Raavi panicked.

The next time? Wasn’t the meeting averted???

This cannot happen! She started breathing heavily. Shiva held her firmly and turned her towards himself after he placed his glass away.

“Raavi! Kya hua? Aye Gadhedi! Meri taraf dekh! Shant ho ja!” Shiva ordered firmly. Raavi looked into his eyes and her panic dissolved as his onyx depths anchored her fearful heart to peace. She watched as his eyes looked at her in concern and his concern caressed her soul and suddenly the haze that had clouded her brain evaporated and she focused on his face alone. He was here. With her. She will be okay... Whatever the book had told her about him, it couldn’t be true because this much concern couldn’t be acted. She held his hand firmly and smiled slightly at him.

“Woh mil chuke hain and Dev aur Rishita ne date pe jane ka irada banakar numbers exchange bhi kar liye hain. Shiva... Hum fail ho gaye.”

“Us Gadhede ne zaroor Rishita ka peecha kiya hoga aur usse milkr number bhi le liya!”

“Ab kya karen??”

“Kisi tarah number delete karne honge!” Shiva declared and looked at her heels. He frowned and then smirked. “Dev se phone leke Rishita ka number delete kar. Aur Rishita ko main sambhalta hoon.” Shiva declared. Then he searched everywhere for Dev and as he saw Raavi stand up. He made her sit again very gently. “Dev!” He called out. Dev looked towards them and started making way to reach by their side. He turned towards Raavi. “Apne pairon par bhaar mat daal.” Then he turned towards Dev who had arrived by then. “Dev Raavi ke saath ruk. Main abhi aaya.” And he left without listening to Dev.

Raavi smiled at Dev and began idle chit chat which Dev seemed least interested in.

“Oh Dev! Zara phone dena. Meri battery khatam ho gayi hai. Mujhe maasi ma se baat karni hai. Aur mujhe zara ghar bhi drop kar dena!” Raavi said. Dev smiled gently and handed his phone to her. Raavi smirked. She went to contacts first and searched Rishita’s number, pressing delete. Then called Prafulla and spoke some mundane stuff about the party and handed his phone back to him. He supported her and started walking towards his scooty.

Shiva walked towards Rishita and as she was about to reach her car, he clashed with her on purpose. The phone in her hand flew towards the well by the side of the hall and as Rishita screamed in horror, it dropped right inside the well.

“Noooooo!” Rishita screamed. Shiva smirked and walked away before Rishita could see him.

Texting cancelled... Meeting cancelled.

Seeing Shiva walk back with a million-dollar smile, she knew their li'l mission had been successful. Their missions had always been successful.

Would he do what he’s doing if he knew it wasn’t his store at stake but her?

Her brain almost automatically went into ‘debate-club’ mode as it always did in Shiva’s case. One side listing out his pros & the other his cons. Only this time they didn’t.

‘He's a good person, he’d do that for anyone!’ The ‘sane’ side voiced out.

‘But you don’t want him to just do it for anyone, you want him to do it for you.. don’t you?’ The ‘insane’ side which was usually at logger-heads with the other decided to magically team up together to make her miserable. Just like the goddamn book was hell-bent on.

“You need to focus, this is about my life!” Raavi reprimanded out loud which made Shiva look at her with a bewildered expression.

‘How could I ever even forget? Her life-long dream about marrying Dev & becoming the ‘Sethani’ of Pandya Store. Of course, it’s about ‘her’ life.’ He thought, shaking his head.

“We’re doing everything we can to fix ‘your’ life! It’d be great if you for once actually call it by it’s given name - ‘Pandya Store’.” Shiva answered back sarcastically, bringing Raavi back from her mental ‘debate-club’.

Raavi was way too tense to make sense of what he perceived & snapped, “We’re clearly not because they met! Can’t you see that?”

“We did everything we possibly could. What the hell do you want me to do? Woo Rishita on Dev’s behalf?” Shiva said with his ever-dormant anger slowly coming out.

“NO” Raavi cut him off angrily before he could even complete his angry tirade.

She could put everything at stake but not him. Never him.
