Pandya Storeâ21:20, February 26, 2019
There were thousands of books that I could have picked out that day. Thousands of happy, peppy romances where the main characters drowned in happy and fluffy love. But out of all the books I could have chosen...I chose the one book that made my skin crawl with frustration.
Shiva slowly picked up the book, observing the corners, the binding... everything. Slowly, he flipped to the first page of the book.
Mera Dev was what the book was called. It described the romance between a poor Gujarati boy named Dev Pandya and a rich Gujarati girl named Rishita Seth. Dev was a silent and compliant boy while Rishita was a firecracker through and through. Though Rishita's family disapproved of the match, she managed to marry into the Pandya family...
He glanced up at her with a frown, but she remained rooted to the ground.
The first time I read the book, I dropped it midway. I hated everything about the book, all the characters. Rishita was too ambitious, Dev was too quiet... The rest of the characters were too trivial... but then something strange was happening... the things that were happened in the novel started to happen in reality... Rishita Seth sat next to her in class... asked for a pen... and ignored her for the rest of the class... just like in the book. And then the cafeteria scene... Rishita had bumped into her and spilled aloo gobi sabzi all over her shirt... and the turmeric stain stayed in her shirt even after washing it... just like the novel.
"So," he stood up a little straighter. "If I'm understanding correctly, you," he pointed to her, "have a book," he glanced down as his fingers moved across the blank page, "that can predict the future," he slowly muttered.
Once those strange occurrences started happening, I finished the entire book finding out that Rishita married Dev Pandya... at the expense of Raavi Narayan's death... of my death. I was not a main character or even a side character... I was a mere prop...
He flipped through the rest of the book... somehow, all the pages were blank. But to her, it was very different... each and every page contained details that explained the circumstances that would lead to her death and how not a single character was there to save her.
The novel described me as a sweet and compassionate girl... someone who was too nice for my own good... and I died. All so the protagonists could have their dream wedding...
"And... Pandya Store would become affected... if she marries into the family...," he closed the book as he frowned.
They were enemies from their childhood. Never agreeing on anything...
There's nothing in this world that means more to me than my own life... if being sweet and compassionate caused me to die... then I'll become a villainess. I'll stop Dev Pandya and Rishita from getting married, from falling in love... from meeting each other... and I will do whatever it takes!
Shiva glanced up at her, his eyes were dark and stormy. Slowly walking over to her, he handed the book, "I would never partner with you for any reason," his eyes dropped to the book and for a second, she saw a flicker of anger flash through his eyes. "But if there is any risk to the store...," he let out a slow sigh and then held out his hand, "Tell me what to do," his words were steely as her lips curled upward. "And I'll do it."
My name is Raavi Narayan, and I will do everything in my power to change my fate!
Even if it means partnering with my childhood enemy...
